Claiming she was protecting wildlife, Gov. Kathy Hochul on Dec. 22, 2023, signed legislation that will put an end to organized coyote hunting contests in the state.
The bill, S.4099/A.2917, was passed by both houses earlier this year and was among several bills sent to the governor ahead of the Christmas holiday. The bill amends the environmental conservation law to make certain hunting contests, competitions, tournaments, and derbies that allow for the take of large numbers of wildlife unlawful.
