In October, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation finalized a Unit Management Plan for the Tug Hill East Unit. The area covers a total of 22,886 acres of public lands spread out amongst seven State Forests, one Unique Area, and 13 Forest Preserve parcels in the Lewis County.

Lake Champlain Institute in New York secures funding for programs, new vessel

The Lake Champlain Research Institute (LCRI) has secured roughly $2 million in grants for several projects, including ongoing monitoring of the lake and a brand new custom research vessel. Established in 1996, the institute studies Lake Champlain and its ecosystems while supporting undergraduate and graduate research.

New York Mixed Bag: Deer escapes from St. Lawrence County captive deer facility

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Region 6 announced that a white-tailed deer recently escaped from a facility in the town of Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County. The deer is marked with ear tags and DEC is asking residents and hunters that observe or take a deer with ear tags in this township or the surrounding area to contact DEC’s Watertown Wildlife office at 315-785-2263.
