News items regarding wolves out of Michigan and Wisconsin should be considered of interest to New York’s sporting community

When I was a kid, my parents had two cameras with which we took family photos. One was a Polaroid Instamatic that in the late 1970s was the coolest thing because you took a picture and about a minute later you had a hard copy of it. Then there was the old 110 film camera, a standard of the era before the 35mm became a little more portable, affordable, and therefore popular at the same time.

A strange deer harvest from Minnesota’s gun season: Is it a buck, or is it a doe?

Rod Host was sitting in his deer stand within a stretch of timber north of Long Prairie in central Minnesota on the morning of Nov. 4 when he noticed a group of whitetails approaching down a trail.

It was a typical rut scene in Minnesota’s Todd County during the opening day of the firearms season. There were seven deer, with does and fawns leading the way, a spike buck near the back, and then what Host thought was a 2 1/2-year-old buck following from behind.

Commentary: Former Wisconsin DNR Secretary Adam Payne looks back on year with DNR

In this season of reflection, I am grateful for all the accomplishments of the Wisconsin DNR over the past year. It has been an honor and privilege to lead this organization and work with such thoughtful, talented, and passionate staff as we all worked together to protect our state’s natural resources while supporting the economy and well-being of our citizenry.

Where to go for big crappies in Wisconsin? Try Windigo near Hayward

The Hayward DNR fisheries team ran a quick spring electrofishing survey along four miles of Windigo Lake shoreline on June 6, 2021, to take a look at largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and bluegills. The team also ran three days worth of a fyke-netting survey May 9-11, 2022, to take a look at northern pike, walleyes and black crappies. Eight fyke (trap) nets were set for two nights.

Nature smart: Photographing beluga whales

In the past when I traveled to the Arctic to film polar bears, I always visited during the winter, or at least when there was snow on the ground. After all, capturing images of polar bears in snow is the quintessential shot.
But on my recent trip, I went during autumn so I could snap images of polar bears in the autumn splendor. But there was a second reason I visited in fall: because the beluga whales would be accessible.
