14,000 rooster pheasants set for stocking this year in Ohio

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife will release more than 14,000 ring-necked pheasants at public hunting areas in late October and November. Releases will begin Saturday, Oct. 21, during Ohio’s youth small game hunting season.
Each fall, the Division of Wildlife releases male pheasants (roosters) at 25 public hunting areas throughout Ohio. The division is scheduled to release 14,020 pheasants this fall. The Division of Wildlife will release pheasants for the following dates.

Ohio’s Mixed Bag: Ohio DNR Director Mertz to chair Great Lakes Commission

During its annual meeting in Oregon, Ohio, the Great Lakes Commission elected Ohio DNR Director Mary Mertz to serve as the organization’s chair.
“We have made protecting Lake Erie a priority in Ohio through Gov. Mike DeWine’s groundbreaking H2Ohio initiative,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said. “I am so honored to earn the commission’s trust in leading them as we continue on our mission to maintain the beauty and usefulness of all our Great Lakes.”

On Ohio’s Dow Lake close to Athens, saugeye prospects are up

Just a few miles outside of Athens in southeastern Ohio, a thin ribbon of water meanders through Strouds Run State Park.
The two-mile long Dow Lake is only 153 acres and less than 300 yards wide at its most expansive point. It’s smallish stature, however, makes it easily accessible for almost any point on the lake. For angling prospects, that’s a good thing. It’s nothing that’s going to break any records, but there’s a fair number of fish at Dow Lake to whet the appetite.

Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission files charges against pair in release of an alligator

Two western Pennsylvania men have been charged by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission in connection with the release of an alligator that remains at large in the Kiskimenitas River.
Austin Randall, 23, of Lindora, Butler County, was issued a summary violation for releasing a non-native species, and Dominic Albert Hayward, 26, of Kiski Township, Armstrong County, was cited for being present when the release occurred, according to commission spokesman Mike Parker. Randall reportedly was in the process of re-homing the 2-foot gator with Hayward on Aug. 29 when the reptile, named Neo, escaped.

Myth dispelled: Opossums don’t eat ticks

You’ve probably seen the meme: it features a cute picture of an opossum, with text that implores the reader to appreciate opossums because they eat ticks.
Among the many variations of this meme that I’ve encountered, the rate of tick-ingestion varies from thousands per week to thousands per season, but the intent of the message doesn’t change: if you hate ticks (and who doesn’t?), then you should love opossums.
There’s just one problem with this sentiment: it’s not true.

Looking back at the history of ringneck pheasants in Iowa

August is always a much-anticipated month for upland game bird hunters in the Hawkeye state. It is during that month that DNR personnel do their annual roadside count.
Since 1962, this roadside count held August 1-15 has been a basis for providing an upland bird count forecast for that year. The statewide survey includes DNR personnel driving 218, 30-mile routes on gravel roads (the same routes each year) on mornings with heavy dew.

CWD in Minnesota: Here’s what hunters should know for the 2023 season

Minnesota’s archery deer-hunting season has been under way for almost a month, and the firearms season kicks off Nov. 4. One of the biggest discussions revolving around deer-hunting this season is chronic wasting disease.
CWD was a focal point for legislators throughout the legislative session, and the DNR is adding new regulations, restrictions, and opportunities to try and stop the spread of CWD in the state.

Blue catfish, freshwater drum invade Delaware River in Pennsylvania

An ill-conceived fisheries management plan in the Chesapeake Bay watershed 40 years ago could wreak havoc on the Delaware River today, as non-native blue catfish have begun to surface in the river’s lower reaches.
Another non-native – freshwater drum – also are proliferating in the lower Delaware, as well as in the lower Schuylkill River, prompting the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission to seek anglers’ help in reporting and removing both species. While their arrival is recent, they threaten to cause serious ecological harm, according to Sean Hartzell, the commission’s invasive species coordinator.
