Cold snap expected this week likely to enhance duck hunt in Minnesota

A push of unseasonably cold weather – complete with robust northwest winds and possibly accumulating snow for parts of northern Minnesota and set to arrive this week – not only will jump-start the fall waterfowl migration, it will send it into overdrive, state officials say.
An Arctic weather system was expected to send temperatures plummeting throughout Minnesota late Thursday, with high temperatures on Friday at or below freezing and lows near 20 degrees for the northern third of the state – a pattern that’s forecast to last for several days. State officials expect a fast freeze-up in northern Minnesota, with ducks and geese moving ahead of the storm and accumulating ice.

Father-daughter team repeats as Chili Bowl walleye tourney winners on Minnesota’s Rainy River

The yearly event was again filled to capacity, with over $20,000 awarded in cash and prizes. And a new tradition was started with the presentation of the “Chili Bowl Cup.”
Many anglers returned from last year’s event, and first place went to last year’s winners – a father-and-daughter team that caught an 18-pound bag.

Minnesota’s Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Fish at different depths for fall success

Late-fall fishing for walleyes is my favorite. It’s a time for good numbers and for big fish. Live-bait rigs and large minnows, jigs and minnows, and glide baits all work great.
Don’t be afraid to fish shallow, and don’t be afraid to fish out deep.

Iowa’s pheasant season opens Oct. 28 with plenty of birds expected in top regions

The pheasant population is up, the crop harvest is advancing quickly and the weekend weather forecast is setting up for an excellent opening weekend for Iowa’s pheasant season.
The annual August roadside survey found Iowa’s statewide pheasant population to be nearly 23 birds per route; a 15% increase over 2022. The biggest increases were in the southwest, northwest and northeast regions.

Pennsylvania’s abundance of natural foods is great for wildlife, but it can make hunting difficult

I live in the middle of the forest in Centre County, Pa. In addition to being a hunter and an angler, I also love to feed and watch birds. I have been feeding forest birds at my woodland home since 1979. And as anyone who feeds birds knows, I am, whether I like it or not, also feeding squirrels.
My forest home gives me an up-close perspective on the natural cycles and the local abundance or absence of important wildlife foods, such as acorns, hickory nuts, and hawthorn apples.
