Winging your way to Ohio’s waterfowl opener

Ohio’s October waterfowl opener is unique in that the weather is nice, a pleasant time to be out duck hunting. Excitement runs high. Nothing like the sounds of a mallard in the distance at sunrise. And the wing beats, you may not even see them yet, but you can hear them.
It just does not get any better than this. To do it right means you cannot drop everything and go when the season rolls around. Here are a couple of things to consider.

Innovation leads to North Dakota wildlife crossings success

Even as a lifelong North Dakota hunter, angler, former game warden, and veteran (old) biologist, there are plenty of times when my colleagues and the state Game and Fish Department make me smile and think, wow, now that’s cool.
Take, for instance, a few years ago when North Dakota’s first big-game crossings were perceived, designed, and created. In the badlands of western North Dakota, given the combination of high-volume traffic, rugged terrain, and even bigger big game such as moose and limited populations of bighorn sheep, the wildlife crossings essentially went from the equivalent of a warning sign to a bypass.

Anxious moments of being caught in the fog: We’ve all been there

In talking to sportsmen and women of all types, including hunters, fishers, campers, trappers, etc., they have a universal response: To a person, they all have a story about being caught in a fog.
My cousin, Doug Cole, has fished for salmon on Lake Michigan for years. After leaving a harbor on an early-morning, a fog rolled in. His group of four found themselves five miles out on Lake Michigan in a fog so thick they couldn’t see past their 21-foot boat.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Fishing leads to better mental health

A new study shows that men who enjoy fishing as a hobby have better mental health.
The study, conducted by researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, Ulster University and Queen’s University, Belfast, found that fishing on a regular basis contributed to a lower risk of depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and other mental health conditions.
