Minnesota reader stories: The ‘perfect double’ makes for a goose hunt to remember

It had been three weeks since the start of Minnesota’s regular duck-season opener, and it was another day of blue skies, no wind, and nearly 80 degrees. Not exactly ducky weather.
We were at our duck shack on Swan Lake near Nicollet. Swan is the largest prairie pothole in the United States, with more than 10,000 acres of marsh and … very few ducks at that time.

Dated back to 1911, the “Nifty Minnie” was one mean lure

“Fish all day with one live minnow.” That was the marketing tag line for the Nifty Minnie. One source dated this unique lure back to 1911, when it was first available to fishermen.
The Minnie was manufactured by the Joseph M. Ness company in Minneapolis, Minn., and, unlike competitors who were making lures with glass, Ness used celluloid (clear plastic), which was much more durable. I can picture a large northern thrashing around in a boat; a glass lure could easily be broken.

Don’t overlook goldenrod larvae as a go-to natural bait for panfish

Like many ice fishermen, I started preparation for the hard-water season several weeks ago. I checked out the portable fish house, but no mice had been at work. My auger started when called upon, and the other accessories, including rods and reels, were in wording order.
While tying on some panfish jigs, I began to think about bait. I’ve successfully tried plastics, which work great in some situations. However, I still lean toward live bait. I hadn’t heard lately about goldenrod larvae being used. Growing up, that was our go-to winter bait.

Anxious moments of being caught in the fog: We’ve all been there

In talking to sportsmen and women of all types, including hunters, fishers, campers, trappers, etc., they have a universal response: To a person, they all have a story about being caught in a fog.
My cousin, Doug Cole, has fished for salmon on Lake Michigan for years. After leaving a harbor on an early-morning, a fog rolled in. His group of four found themselves five miles out on Lake Michigan in a fog so thick they couldn’t see past their 21-foot boat.

The Old Brown Boat, and others like her, have many stories to tell

The “Old Brown Boat” as my wife, Colleen, and I call it, usually floats tied to our dock, waiting for its next trip. It reminds me of a hunting dog on a leash, just waiting to be released.
At one point in its life, the 14-foot Alumacraft was dent-free, shiny and new. The old boat may not be quite as old as this writer, but I bet it would have some interesting stories to tell. If you look at her today, she’s well used and a little abused. There are holes in the seats, where there once were swivel seats. The motor mount has been replaced so many times that the bolt holes look like machine gun hits.
