Iowa’s always-anticipated deer season opens: Here’s what to expect

An estimated 60,000 hunters will be heading to the timber in the next few months with Iowa’s archery deer season opening on Oct. 1. With some careful planning and scouting, hunters can capitalize on the predictable behavior of deer in the early fall.
“Early season deer strategy is usually pretty straightforward — find the feeding areas and you’ll find the deer,” said Jace Elliott, state deer biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “Acorns, which are high in both carbohydrates and fats, are becoming a major food source that hunters would be wise to target in the early archery season.”

Iowa’s Harmon Lake Wildlife Area ready for a busy fall

Standing at the gravel boat ramp on the middle pool of Harmon Lake, among a dense stand of bur-reed full of seeds, four noisy trumpeter swans appeared over the trees then banked west at the sight of unwelcomed visitors.
Harmon Lake Wildlife Area is nearly 1,000 acres of prairie-wetland complex in northern Winnebago County, Iowa, anchored by three larger pools – west, middle and east – with the middle pool identified as a sovereign lake when the state was settled.

Japanese barberry, now rampant in Pennsylvania, lands on Department of Agriculture’s banned species list

Tracing a hemlock-lined draw down a remote creek in Clinton County, Pa., I followed the zigzagging rattle of my bird dog Cali’s bell. Nearing the bottom of the draw, an expanse of low-lying shrubs — ablaze in autumn’s glory of red, orange, and yellow — came fully into view.
Seconds later, Cali’s bell fell silent, and the tell-tale sweep of her tale indicated a bird was near. With barely enough time to hurry into position, a ruffed grouse flushed from the cover dappled with bright red berries, dodging my errant shot, and dipping to temporary safety further along the dense creek bottom.
The beautiful, albeit spiny, cover that harbored this ruffed grouse — much like it does for stocked pheasants back home in my Lebanon and Schuylkill County haunts — is known as Japanese barberry, an invasive ornamental plant.

Minnesota’s Voyageurs Wolf Project releases its 2022-23 wolf report showing stable population

The Voyageurs Wolf Project released its annual wolf population report last week that reveals a stable population of wolves in the border country around Voyageurs National Park.
Tom Gable, project lead for the project, said the average pack size decreased because packs are raising fewer pups. The territory size also decreased, but Gable has seen more overlapping territories. The project expanded from 14 to 20 territories because of the staff and support the project received last year. The efforts are funded by Legislative-Citizens Commission on Minnesota Resources/Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, along with private donors.

Thoughts on bowhunting whitetails during a bumper acorn crop

Every few years, we get a heavy acorn crop. And this year, 2023, is one of them in New York… in certain spots. That has been the report from many areas in the country where oaks are prevalent.
Bumper acorns equates for me, to spectacular bow hunting for whitetails in the early part of the season. However, though it may seem counterintuitive, some deer hunters have voiced a preference for those more frequent years with sparse mast (acorns, beech, apples, wild cherry, etc.)
