Squirrel hunting: A great way to build a lifelong hunter

Recently, I was overjoyed to see a local sportsmen club hosting a “Squirrel Derby” for young hunters. I’ve always felt that squirrel hunting was the best way to build a lifelong hunter and instill much-needed hunting skills.
Sadly, it seems for many to have fallen by the wayside. I see many types of “learn to hunt” and hunter recruitment programs skip completely over this valuable hunting experience and go straight for the big game or waterfowl hunts.

Ohio Division of Wildlife’s online app comes up short on sunrise, sunset tables

The Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife’s much ballyhooed smart phone app does have a bunch of useful information, which is why both my wife and I have installed it on our cell phones.
We can buy our licenses and tags online, check the status of what we’ve bought (though my state duck stamp, HIP registration, and deer permit are not included. But I digress), scroll through some of the agency’s latest press releases, record a muskie catch, enter a Fish Ohio application, report wildlife sightings, and make a tour of other ODNR agencies.

Engineering bid approved for sewer, water line connecting Iowa state park and municipality

Engineering contracts were approved recently by the Iowa Natural Resources Commission for three projects, including the largest outlay that will eventually connect a sewer and water line from Beeds Lake State Park to a nearby municipality.
By a unanimous vote, the commission approved a bid of $339,100 from Shive-Hattery, Inc. of West Des Moines, Iowa, to provide engineering services for the project at Beeds Lake State Park. Work is to be completed by May 15, 2025.

A look at public access opportunities for North Dakota hunters

August means the early Canada goose season and the beginning of the 2023 hunting seasons. Part of the process is looking for places to hunt from the first geese to ducks, deer, pheasants and grouse.
Did you know about 93% of the land in North Dakota is privately owned? It’s no wonder in this society where if we can shave off a few seconds off a drive or chore we’ll often head for the path of less time spent on the journey giving us more time at the destination.

Outdoor Insights: A duck stamp created by artificial intelligence?

With the Aug. 15 deadline to submit entries to the 2023 federal duck stamp contest passed, artists now await judging (this year in Des Moines, Iowa) on Sept. 15-16. Last week, I tried contacting the federal duck stamp office for an answer to what I thought was a simple question: Are contest officials monitoring the potential for entries generated via artificial intelligence (AI)?

Commentary: Are powerline corridors a missed opportunity for wildlife benefits in Minnesota?

Minnesota is fortunate to have over 12 million acres of public land, of which 5.6 million acres are managed by the state and 2.8 million acres are managed by counties. These lands provide trees for the timber industry, fish and wildlife for hunters and fishers, trails for hikers, skiers, and recreation vehicle users, and refuges for rare plant and animal species.
Unfortunately, our public lands also often provide a convenient location for powerline rights of way.

Minnesota DNR assuming oversight of state’s deer farms as new laws take shape

Oversight of whitetailed deer farms in Minnesota was a frequently discussed matter during this year’s legislative session, with the Legislature passing new laws that took effect July 1 and other rules that will take effect Sept. 1 and in 2024.
One of the changes: the Minnesota DNR having full authority over those deer farms. The DNR previously had had regulatory authority of whitetailed deer farms until 2005, when the Legislature transferred that authority to the state’s Board of Animal Health.
