An Alaskan moose-hunting saga, Part 3: The real work begins

After the shot, I jumped in my canoe and raced across the narrow channel so fast you could have waterskied behind me. But once I reached the mainland, I was nervous about what I might find. I hoped like heck not an injured moose.
And then, there he was, velvet antler pointing skyward, the animal stone dead. Still, I approached cautiously, making sure I was entirely certain he was dead. Had I been shooting at a target, it would have been a terrible shot.

Some aspects of fishing and ‘social media’ don’t mesh

The world seems to be changing faster and faster and I am having a hard time keeping up with the changes. I’m trying not to be an old fuddy-duddy and buck the future while I still live in the past. I swear I am not. It’s just that things change so quickly!
Let’s talk about professional tournament fishing. I was recently made aware of a change that I can’t put my arms around. I just don’t understand it. I hope this change was just a blip on my radar and will not be a trend that spreads like wildfire.

Your back-to-school (outdoor) reading list

You’ve been busy this summer fishing, camping, and whatnot, so you probably did not have much time for reading. I’ve been just as busy as you. So busy, in fact, that I put off assigning your summer reading until now.
With a few weeks left of summer, here are two books you shouldn’t wait any longer to dive into before your thoughts turn to the upcoming hunting seasons.

New York DEC using in-person angler surveys to better understand catch rates of Lake George salmon

Joe Greco, owner of Justy Joe Charters on Lake George, has been taking hundreds of anglers onto the lake annually for more than three decades, targeting George’s lake trout, landlocked Atlantic salmon, and bass. Clients catch big lakers and bass all day long. Salmon, though, are another story.
Greco, many anglers, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation have been trying to figure out why the salmon fishing has been up-and-down for decades.

Illinois law lowers cost of fishing license for new, ‘lapsed’ anglers

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed House Bill 2317 into law on Aug. 15, essentially giving “lapsed” Illinois anglers a chance to get back into fishing at a bargain price.
It’s $5 for those who qualify. It’s also a one-time deal.
The legislation, filed by State Rep. Bob Rita, D-Blue Island, significantly reduces the license fee for fishing or spearing for anyone 26 years old and older.

New York fly-fishing museum draws hundreds of history buffs to festival

Hundreds of anglers and fly-fishing history buffs gathered recently at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum, in Livingston Manor, Sullivan County, along the famed Willowemoc River for the CFFCM Summer Fest 2023, held Aug. 5-6.
Just over the bridge to the museum, the parking lot was filled to capacity with vendors, exhibits, fly-tyers, fishing rods, reels, and a multitude of angling must-haves.

Amid dry and hot conditions, dog owners told to be aware of blue-green algae during hunts

The dog days of summer are here, and Minnesota officials are warning dog owners to be mindful of blue-green algae poisoning, which can be lethal to canines.
State officials say recent hot weather coupled with ongoing drought conditions throughout the state have created what one official called peak conditions for an outbreak in state lakes and other bodies of water, including wetlands. The harmful algal blooms – HABs – which often resemble pea soup or spilled green paint or mats of green scum, are linked to illness in humans and animals.
