A lesson learned: Fisheries folks work hard to serve anglers

John Muir said that in every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks. I believe that’s true. Sometimes, getting a behind-the-scenes look at how hard state agencies work to provide an enjoyable outdoor experience for sportsmen can be particularly eye-opening, too.

Sportsmen just want to be left alone, but that’s not how this works

Those of us who hunt, fish and trap, by nature, are a passive bunch. We just want to go sit in a treestand, hit our favorite trout stream or bass pond, and be left alone for a while. Could antler point restrictions be the answer for a more balanced deer herd in parts of Minnesota?

For decades, Minnesota DNR surveys have shown that many hunters want change, but there’s little agreement on regulations to increase the number of older bucks. The result continues to be a deer population that lacks a balanced age and sex structure in many parts of the state.
Could a state like Missouri, with a similar number of hunters and a gun season that, like Minnesota, falls during its peak breeding period, be a model for how a limited antler point restriction could do something to improve the balance of that age and sex structure in areas where CWD is not present?
