Bait supply shortage affecting Minnesota anglers

The topic of low bait inventory came up repeatedly at the MN-FISH summit on May 3 in Rogers. Trappers and suppliers on hand pleaded for help in improving the bait supply for retailers and their customers.
Marshall Koep, owner of Clitherall-based Urbank Live Bait Co., said the bait supply hasn’t improved this summer. Meetings with the DNR have discussed solutions to improve the supply, but ultimately, Koep believes Minnesota needs to import from other states.

Minnesota’s 2023 early teal season last year of three-year experiment

For a third consecutive year, Minnesota waterfowl hunters may participate in an experimental five-day “early” teal season, which begins Sept. 2.
The idea behind the season is to give hunters an added opportunity to hunt teal before the regular duck season. That’s because blue-winged teal in particular – one of the most abundant and widely distributed ducks in North America, as well as the second-most abundant breeding duck in Minnesota – are notoriously early migrators.

New fish plant planned in southern Illinois would help remove carp from Ohio, Mississippi rivers

Copi from both the Mississippi River and Ohio River could soon be processed at a proposed fish plant to be built in southern Illinois.
Copi – the name given to Asian carp by the state last summer – would be processed in Alexander County on land currently owned by DNR. Two Rivers Fisheries, a western Kentucky company that launched operations across the Ohio River in 2012, is expected to purchase the parcel, which sits adjacent to Fort Defiance State Park and the city of Cairo.

Weather and salmon bite both hot on Lake Ontario

It was supposed to be a nice, leisurely salmon fishing trip on Lake Ontario, launching out of Oswego, N.Y., with veteran Capt. Ed Monette, who operates Cannonball Runner Charters.
Fishing buddies Terry Catlin of Chemung, and Todd Smith, of South Waverly, Pa., and I had it all planned: box out with three kings each and return home with plenty of filets, as have so many other anglers this summer, including those aboard Monette’s 35-foot Wellcraft 3300. Mother Nature and the salmon had other ideas.
