Access expansion at Pennsylvania’s Twenty-mile Creek opens up opportunity for steelhead fishing

Twenty-mile creek, in Erie County, is a tributary to Lake Erie that will always hold a special place in my heart, and a recent change to re-access waters that had been closed to the public for a couple of decades is going to recharge my fondness for the waterway.
The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission announced Jan. 13 that it acquired an easement that regenerates nearly 9,000 linear feet of public fishing access upstream from the highway bridge at Route 5. It is the largest public fishing easement acquisition to date.

Young clay target shooters impress at nationals in Ohio

A number of young shooters from Ohio took home top honors during the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) National Championships held in Central Ohio in July. More than 3,100 youth shooters competed in the events held at the Cardinal Shooting Center from July 4–15. The 12-day event saw well over 2 million targets thrown in official events and tens of thousands thrown in practice and side events.

Youth fishing event in Ohio honors late Arbogast Lure Co. leader

On a sunny day during an otherwise rainy week, The Fishing Foundation hosted a youth fishing event at Division of Wildlife District Three Headquarters in Akron. Three ponds at District Three headquarters that are designated for young people 15 and younger had 35 kids from the Boys and Girl Clubs of Northeast Ohio catching sunfish, bluegills, bass, and channel catfish.

DeWine at Governor’s Fish Ohio Day: Lake Erie is a ‘high priority’

Gov. Mike DeWine called Lake Erie “a high priority” during his short speech at the end of the 43rd annual Governor’s Fish Ohio Day.
That was readily apparent on July 20 when DeWine was joined by ODNR Division of Wildlife personnel, state and federal legislators, Lake Erie charter boat captains, and media for the annual event that highlights the Lake Erie walleye and yellow perch fishery.

Pennsylvania’s Big Bass Program may be a misguided endeavor

Ever since the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission introduced the Big Bass Program on certain lakes across the state, I’ve been a big fan. Perhaps watching big largemouths being lifted from storied waters by some well-known anglers on TV had piqued my own desire for fighting a heavy fish with a wide gaping mouth.

Commentary: Pennsylvania Game Commission should push for a cut in hunting license fees

A recent issue triggered some reflective thinking by this old, retired federal auditor. The front-page article headlined,“Bill Would Give PGC License Fee Power,” made me wonder why is there any need?
Why would any legislative body give fee increases to any agency under legislative review? Where does “checks and balances” begin or end? Where is any oversight from the people?
