Commentary: Minnesotans to vote in ’24 on environment’s share of lottery proceeds

In the Minnesota Environmental Partnership’s recent 2023 legislative wrap-up, we covered many of the tremendous victories the environmental community won at the State Capitol this year.
But one of our most important – and most challenging – wins this session will bear its fruit on Nov. 5, 2024. On that Election Day, Minnesotans will vote to renew the 40% share of proceeds from the state lottery that goes to our environment and natural resources.

A longtime angling advocate, Minnesota’s Frank Schneider Jr. would’ve approved of 2023 support for fishing

This is a good time to remember Frank Schneider Jr. Until he died in 2005 at the age of 86, Frank was a one-man force on behalf of fishing. Unpaid and unafraid, Frank attended countess legislative hearings and/or testified before lawmakers in support of good fishing laws or in opposition to stupid bills.

Put a charge into slow summer fishing by targeting carp on artificials

It was the perfect time of year for the method I was employing.
Discarded crayfish shells lined the shallows, and there were a lot of fish looking to feed on the soft-shelled morsels they knew were lurking under the rocks. Using polarized sunglasses to cut the water’s glare, I found one such fish swimming nearby and as gently as possible, placed my crayfish imitation in the water just in front of its nose.
The strike was tremendous, and soon line was peeling off the reel much faster than I could have reeled it back in.

Fishing the Hex hatch in Michigan: Both maddening and magical

We noticed the mayflies in the air at around 10:30 p.m. and within minutes the fish were feeding.
There was a pair that sounded like good ones feeding within earshot – one upstream, one downstream – and Jory Dirkse suggested we try the upstream fish first. He maneuvered his drift boat slightly from where he was anchored midstream on the Pere Marquette River to give me a better angle and there was just enough moonlight to see a splash as it fed.

Perfect your presentations during tough river fishing in the heat of summer

Spring is a magical time for an angler to be wading in a river.
Summer is a different story. Quality fish are not where I left them in the spring. Conditions change, the fish adjust to survive. I blame the lack of rain, the lifeblood of a river. Groundwater seeping in can only do so much.
