New York DEC’s Lake Ontario tributaries report shows trout, salmon catch rates down significantly in some tribs

Saratoga County resident Alex Ross makes an annual trip to the Salmon River, in Oswego County, N.Y., each fall seeking big salmon and trout as they migrate into the river. Last September, with water levels low, was one of the more challenging visits.
“There didn’t seem to be nearly as many fish in the river as we have seen some of the past years,” he explained. “We got one decent Coho (salmon), that was about it.”
Ross’ perceptions weren’t off base, it seems.

Worm hot spots for fishing: Here’s where to find them

When I was a kid, I had to be ready to go fishing on a moment’s notice. Luckily for my brothers and me, we had a milk run that was sure to produce the needed worms for short-notice fishing, and collecting them was almost as much fun as catching fish.
The yard at Grandma’s cabin was stacked with worm-producing hot spots. And I should note, it’s helpful to have lots of concrete gnomes, flower boxes, and other grandma-y garden-y stuff for good worm production.

Minnesota DNR looks at first-ever mushroom, berry ‘bag’ limits for state parks

The Minnesota DNR has began a rule-making process to potentially have its first-ever daily limit on wild mushroom and berry picking at state parks. The agency says the current regulations are vague and can be interpreted differently to anyone, so the DNR believes new rules would give clarification.
Ann Pierce, the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division director, said state parks have seen an increase in forage harvesters. Also, there’s a worry that overharvesting could affect the wildlife that depend on wild mushrooms and berries as well as the soil health.

APHIS: Deer, humans have exchanged virus that causes COVID

Scientists say the virus that causes COVID was transmitted from humans to deer, before mutating and potentially being transmitted from deer back to humans.
The research is a serious undertaking by USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, which teamed with Ohio State University and the University of Missouri. Researchers monitored wild deer between November 2021 and April 2022, collecting more than 9,000 respiratory samples from 27 different states, including Illinois. When announcing the findings, USDA noted that it is important to understand that virus spread caused by wild animals “is extremely rare.”

An ode to the bank fishermen among us

Here’s a salute to bank fishing and the countless anglers who engage in this universal method of our ancient tradition.
It is perhaps the oldest hook-and-line method, primitive nets and traps or natural “poisons” aside.
Bank fishermen have little or no access to boats, and some of them are just plain uncomfortable being on the water. But that makes them no less avid or capable as anglers than folks with $100,000 bass boats or walleye rigs.

Lead core line still productive for walleyes

Successful trolling for walleye is an exercise in efficiency. The more efficient anglers are at keeping the maximum number of lures in front of the fish, the more success they will have.
During a recent Michigan DNR walleye fishing school on Saginaw Bay, walleye fishing guru and Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame member Mark Martin put on a clinic in efficiency by teaching students an often-overlooked trolling method: running crankbaits behind lead-core line.
