Minnesota company will print Iowa fishing regulations booklet

A Minnesota company will print Iowa’s 2024 fishing regulations booklet, agreeing to print and distribute 175,000 copies to license sales vendors, natural resources agencies and DNR locations.
A contract was approved Thursday with Forum Communications Co. of Detroit Lakes, MN., at a cost of $22,044.  That’s a slight increase from the $21,507 that the Iowa Natural Resources Commission paid to the same company last year.

High water temperatures, low flows cause shovelnose sturgeon kill on Iowa’s lower Des Moines River

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issued a release on the evening of July 13 reporting a substantial loss of shovelnose sturgeon in the lower Des Moines River due to high water temperatures and low water levels on a long stretch of the river.
The DNR was notified on July 10 of a fish kill on the lower Des Moines River. DNR staff from the Fisheries Bureau investigated and found an estimated 20,000 dead shovelnose sturgeon in a 60 mile river stretch from near Ottumwa to Farmington in southeast Iowa.

Amid calls for action, Minnesota DNR seeks to update plan for invasive carp

The Minnesota DNR is working on updating its “Minnesota Invasive Carp Action Plan” this summer, along with federal and adjacent state agencies and various stakeholders. The DNR says it’s using a “structured decision-making process” to determine future actions to stop the spread of carp in the state.
Heidi Wolf, the DNR’s invasive species unit supervisor, said the process began a couple of weeks ago, and the goal is to have a plan completed by the end of 2023.
