In the fall of 2020, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) learned of the possible sale of 50 acres of land directly north of Elinor Bedell State Park on the shores of East Lake Okoboji.
This was 2,020 feet of shoreline that was prime development property. Now known as the Narrows Preserve, this 50-acre parcel benefits water quality, wildlife and the public – both residents and visitors alike.

Dedicated in the spring of 2005, Iowa’s Chichaqua-Neal Smith Grassland Bird Conservation Area is an important stop along the bird migration. Based on weather radar, an estimated 800 million birds migrate through Iowa in the spring, and up to one billion in the fall, which puts Iowa in the top five states in the country for volume.
“Iowa is globally important for migration and it’s important to have habitat available during the migration as a stopover,” said Anna Buckardt Thomas, avian ecologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Things have changed a lot in the last decade or so as millions of dollars in Marcellus shale natural gas receipts from under state game lands have flowed into Game Commission coffers.

The deadline for said nominations this year is Aug. 4. We deviated a bit from the norm a year ago, selecting Chuck Delaney and Game Fair as the award winner and in the process creating a “lifetime achievement award” category.
