Bluffland Whitetails Association in Minnesota commits to governor’s deer opener after MDHA drops out

The Bluffland Whitetails Association confirmed earlier this week that it will join the cast that produces the Minnesota Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener this fall, the location yet to be determined.
The development comes after the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association – one of the original sponsors of the event that began 20 years ago – announced in May that it was withdrawing from participation “due to continued attempts to ban wolf hunting and anti-gun legislation within the state, which are in direct opposition to our mission,” according to an MDHA release.

What you need to know to be ready for Ohio’s fall dove season

Dove season provides hunters an obvious opportunity display of wingshooting skill. The doves will be there, so will the misses, which is why I go I suppose. To show the birds how lucky they are, to fly over me instead of someone else. Another might hit them.
Controlled hunts are held in District 1 and District 5 in Central and Southwest Ohio, respectively. The lottery to attend one opens in July. Several other wildlife areas provide additional opportunities with dove fields, and there’s no need to enter a lottery to hunt a dove field.

Old Crow Wetlands in Pennsylvania: Replace a replacement?

The Old Crow Wetlands issue near Huntingdon, Pa., embodies a weakness in our process for protecting natural spaces, wetlands specifically.
It should be noted, though, that only those who value natural spaces, wetlands in this case, perceive a weakness. Others argue that our process of reviewing and issuing permits to developers, builders, and government agencies wishing to site projects on or near wetlands is not weak enough.

Minnesota DNR talks next steps in transfer of Upper Sioux Agency State Park

Transferring Upper Sioux Agency State Park lands to the Upper Sioux Community tribe is going to be a complex task, representatives of the Minnesota DNR said June 29. One of the many steps in the process will be to find other places with potential for outdoor recreation in the Minnesota River Valley.
“The state Legislature has moved forward with the process to transfer the park, and we’re going to talk about some of that legislation and what that means,” said Scott Roemhildt, DNR southern region director.

Here’s how to catch salmon without downriggers

You don’t need downriggers to catch salmon in the spring and fall when they are shallow. Plenty of salmon can be caught then using just divers and deep-diving stickbaits behind in-line planer boards. Salmon are attracted to the tepid water found near shore in the spring and the baitfish it attracts. Fishing is usually in 40 feet of water or less, so downriggers aren’t necessary; quality rod holders are.
