New disease now threatening Pennsylvania’s beech trees

A new disease impacting beech trees has spread across Pennsylvania, and foresters believe it could be potentially devastating.
Beech leaf disease was first detected in Ohio in 2012 and appeared in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania – in Erie and Crawford counties – in 2016. Since then, the disease has been found in every county, most recently in Washington and Greene counties.

Pennsylvania’s Hunters Sharing the Harvest program sets new record for venison donation

Pennsylvania deer hunters fed the hungry in historic fashion during the 2022-23 hunting seasons – donating a total of 235,532 pounds of venison from 6,201 deer and four elk via Hunters Sharing the Harvest.
Reflecting a nearly 25% increase, the recent season numbers eclipsed the previous record of 190,302 pounds from 4,896 deer donated during the 2020-21 hunting season.

Commentary: Pennsylvania Game Commission’s participation in NWTF convention is a good thing

I have been attending the National Wild Turkey Federation’s national convention in Nashville, Tennessee, for more than a decade. My first trip to the convention was during my tenure as a Pennsylvania game commissioner.
The NWTF convention represents the largest conservation gathering in the country. It’s more than your average sport show. In addition to dedicated turkey hunters, this annual event is a gathering of professionals in the fields of conservation, law enforcement and wildlife management.

How lessons from “summer school” helped shape me as a sportsman

When I was a kid, to me summer began in July. That’s when school had ended, perhaps later than in any other state, and good times in the country would begin, free of a classroom. At the time, however, I didn’t realize or appreciate that those summer months also provided a school for me.

At age 80, Gene Kroupa’s 50th gobbler caps off a fantastic spring

The 2023 spring turkey season started out with a challenge – tagging three toms in order to reach a lifetime total of 50 birds. That string started with a 22-pound bird way back in 1981 in Missouri.
Some of the intervening years were marked with unfilled tags or blanked seasons from not drawing one in the state’s lottery. My first Wisconsin gobbler hit the ground in 1983, the year of the state’s inaugural season, thanks to a stocking program started in the 1970s with birds from Missouri.
