Pennsylvania’s Tobyhanna Lake offers good fishing for many species

Tobyhanna Lake was once best known for its ice. Entrepreneurs cut it out in great blocks in winter, stored it in barns and, across the coming year, sold it to railroads looking to refrigerate fresh meat and produce bound for East Coast cities.
That industry is gone now, of course. Instead, there’s a different reason to visit Tobyhanna Lake, one that’s surely a lot more fun than working by hand outdoors in the coldest months of the year. That’s to fish.

Fish reefs to be installed soon in Pennsylvania’s Monongahela River

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin this month to install 73 fish reefs in the Monongahela River in southwestern Pennsylvania as part of a $1.23 billion overhaul of the navigational lock and dam system to better accommodate barge traffic.
Installation of the rock reefs is designed to compensate for the loss of 46 acres of prime fish habitat that will result from the removal of outmoded lock and dam number 3 in Elizabeth next year, according to Stephen Frost, the Corps’ manager of the entire Mon project.

Bears are frequenting ‘The Burg’ in Pennsylvania again this spring

Marisa Greubter got an unexpected eyeful in late June when she went to let out the dogs in her suburban Pittsburgh yard and saw a black bear standing on its hind legs eating at her birdfeeder.
“I have a biology degree so I thought it was kind of cool,” the Ross Township resident told WTAE-TV news. “But I really don’t want him hanging around because I don’t want to have to worry about it. Everyone has kids and dogs. My own dogs are little.”
