Summer bluegill bite is on in Ohio

Get out the ultralight tackle, small flies and crickets or bee moth, the bluegills are coming. Not too many weeks ago in Ohio, you could scarcely find the start of a bluegill nest bed. Now, the tell-tale honeycombed shaped indentions near the bank reveal the presence of plenty of them scattered along the shorelines of farm ponds, lakes, and reservoirs alike.

Ohio’s Civilian Marksmanship Program celebrates 25th anniversary of Garand Match

In 2023, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the John C. Garand Match at the annual National Matches at Camp Perry. Severe storm damage closes boardwalk at Ohio’s Maumee Bay State Park

During the early evening of June 15, several confirmed tornadoes touched down in the northwest, first near Detroit Beach in Monroe County, Mich., and then in Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, Erie, Huron, Seneca, Richland, Ashland, and Wayne counties in Ohio. 
Some of the largest hail seen in many years, as large as at least tennis balls, proved the intensity of the rotation of the super cell updrafts that quickly intensified after the front passed over Western Lake Erie.

Ohio Insider: Rise of sandhill cranes in state a success story worth celebrating

While they’re certainly not as popular as bald eagles in Ohio, sandhill cranes deserve a little bit of our attention, too.

We gave the tall, lanky birds some love on the cover of our June 23 edition in a story that spoke of this year’s volunteer crane count in Ohio. As it turns out, volunteer observers in a single day of counting noted 357 sandhills in Ohio, which was a jump from the 311 counted in 2022. During the inaugural year of the count, 2021, observers marked 160 birds.
