Michigan bill would limit private property access for DNR employees

An Upper Peninsula lawmaker wants to curtail the ability of DNR employees to tread onto private property without a warrant, reviving legislation introduced in prior sessions.
State Rep. Greg Markkanen, R-Hancock, introduced House Bill 4385 in April to remove what’s known as Open Field Doctrine for DNR employees.

Iowa’s Protect Our Lakes initiative takes shape to halt spread of invasives

On Aug. 3, 2022 Eurasian watermilfoil was found on East Okoboji and the lower chain of lakes. Mike Hawkins, Iowa DNR fisheries biologist, spearheaded a group of concerned residents and nonprofit organizations to decide how to address the situation.
A new educational and preventative initiative called “Protect Our Lakes” is being spearheaded by Exploreokoboji.com and its five radio stations to help to get the word out to local residents, seasonal residents and tourists that these lakes are being threatened by invasive species and what we can all do to protect the Iowa Great Lakes.

Rough Fish Roundup in Illinois draws archers from across the Midwest

It’s considered “old school” by some, and that’s exactly how bow anglers like it.
The annual Kaskaskia River Rough Fish Round Up Bowfishing Tournament in Illinois took place at the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam, again doing its part to remove invasive carp from the lower Kaskaskia River. Each year, this “Average Joe” tournament draws participants from across the Midwest.

What are the top five bass flies? We asked the experts

A fishing friend recently told me he wanted to try fly fishing for bass. He knew there were hundreds of fancy trout flies, but should he get different ones for more aggressive freshwater bass?
We’ve all heard those familiar questions: If you were allowed only one book on a desert island, what would you pick? If you were allowed one companion, who would you pick? Even more tragic, if you were allowed only five flies to use for bass, what would they be? Imagine the emotional consequences of such a question.

Judge’s ruling requires a Lake Erie ‘diet’ study to address harmful algal blooms

After coursing through the legal system for the past six years, U.S. District Court Judge James Carr issued a consent decree on May 4 to address the algal bloom problems plaguing Western Lake Erie.
This move formalizes the agreement that the plaintiffs, including the Environmental Law Policy Center (ELPC) and the Lucas County Commissioners and the defendants the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Ohio EPA worked out to begin a clean-up plan to try to control harmful algal blooms.
