Pennsylvania hunting family is grappling with grief, tinged with pride after a tragic death

Months before his untimely death, Paul Berger and his two adult children each completed a triple crown – harvesting turkeys, white-tailed deer and black bears in the span of the 2021-22 license year.
For the Westmoreland County family that had hunted together since Alyssa, 34, and Tyler, 32, were young kids, the “triple triple crown” was an extraordinary feat. It took on even more meaning after Paul’s tragic passing at 63 in a trapping-related accident along Loyalhanna Creek Dec. 27.

Ohio’s early turkey kill this spring in good standing

Data supplied by the Ohio Division of Wildlife appears to demonstrate the state’s turkey flock is on the road to recovery, thanks in some measure to tightening of bag limits.
It is important to note, too, that the totals shown for this year and last year includes the results of their respective two-day, youth-only turkey-hunting seasons. This year, youth hunters were blessed with absolutely ideal turkey-hunting weather.

New York reader stories: Missing in the wilderness for 1,291 days

Pine Lake is a remote pristine Adirondack lake, which is located northeast of Indian Lake, in Hamilton County, N.Y. The lake is known for good fishing and the surrounding forest has superb hunting for big white-tailed bucks and bears.
The region is unquestionably beautiful, but deceptively dangerous as well. With a combination of difficult terrain and rapidly changing weather, this environment is potentially hazardous. Injuries are not uncommon, and the sheer size of this wilderness area results in many people becoming lost.

Top muskie anglers share their knowledge during Wisconsin event in Stevens Point

He didn’t know it then, but one fish changed Josh Teigen’s life.
That fish? A 42-inch muskie he caught as a 7-year-old while fishing with his dad near his home in Bayfield County, Wis.
Teigen, now a fishing guide, turned up at Stevens Point’s Fleet Farm April 20 as part of the store’s Musky Days.
“We were fishing on the Pike Lake Chain, which is where I grew up in Iron River,” he said. “I caught the 42-incher on a Suick. I remember that fish T-boning it right by the boat. That’s what got me hooked.”

Minnesota’s deep snow conditions factor in lowest harvest of fishers and martens in years

The Minnesota DNR recently released its 2022-23 harvest report for trapping seasons. The fisher and marten harvest numbers both were in the low 200s, marking the lowest harvest since the trapping seasons were re-established in 1977 for fishers and 1985 for pine martens.
Bobcat and otter harvests were low as well, which begs the question: Why were the numbers so low this season? Deep snow conditions did not help.
