SCOTUS denies Gazzola FFL case, lead ammo ban legislation resurfaces in New York

The Gazzola v. Hochul lawsuit, which seeks to provide New York firearms dealers relief from a number of provisions put forth by new gun laws passed last year, will not be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. In an April 21 ruling a unique Rule 11 petition that would’ve brought the case out of the New York City based Second Circuit court and moved it up to SCOTUS was denied.

Don’t let an accident happen in the turkey woods

No matter what your definition of a successful hunt is, it can never be applied to an outing when an accident occurs. In turkey hunting, where hunters try to conceal themselves with camouflage from head to foot, the scenario for a hunting accident might seem particularly apt to unfold. It is your job to make sure that it doesn’t.

2023 Great Lakes Preview — A smorgasbord of fishing!

As we enter another edition of the New York Outdoor News Great Lakes Preview, there are still a fair number of people out there who have not sampled the fishing menu that each lake has to offer. I know this because I run into people all the time who have never caught a spring salmon in Lake Ontario or tussled with a feisty smallmouth bass on Lake Erie. Those are but two examples of a smorgasbord of angling adventures that Erie and Ontario have to offer.

Tying the proper knot will get more fish in the boat

I take a lot of people out on my boat and I like them to participate as much as possible. They can choose lures from my tackle collection, I’ll coach them about how to use the ’riggers, divers, planers, or other gear, and I let them deploy their own lines and lures, even if it takes longer.
If I think they can handle netting the fish, unhooking the lure, or steering the boat, I say, “Go for it!” It’s the difference for them between going fishing and being taken fishing.
The exception is when it’s time to tie a knot. I trust my knots – I won’t automatically trust yours.

2023 Great Lake Preview — Lake Ontario: Species diversity delivers

Lake Ontario is New York’s Mount Everest when it comes to the state’s outstanding sport fishery. It leads the way in angler usage, and correspondingly, in economic impact. At the top of list of angling attractions is its vibrant Chinook (and Coho) salmon fishery. However, public perception is often controlled by its salmon stocking efforts and how the program seems to be progressing.
