I take a lot of people out on my boat and I like them to participate as much as possible. They can choose lures from my tackle collection, I’ll coach them about how to use the ’riggers, divers, planers, or other gear, and I let them deploy their own lines and lures, even if it takes longer.
If I think they can handle netting the fish, unhooking the lure, or steering the boat, I say, “Go for it!” It’s the difference for them between going fishing and being taken fishing.
The exception is when it’s time to tie a knot. I trust my knots – I won’t automatically trust yours.
