A youth turkey tale that goes to plan in New York

A few days before the April 22-23 youth turkey hunting weekend, I headed for the hunting location in Washington County to put up a tent blind and do some quick scouting. It didn’t take long to find what I was looking for as I spotted three mature gobblers on the property. Between that sighting, and reports from the farmer who owns the property, I was confident my 13-year-old mentee, Josh Stone, of Hartford, might see some action.

Commentary: New York DEC’s stream verification plan could inhibit access to trout streams

A school bus of excited special needs kids arrives at a popular fishing hole on the Lisha Kill on a recent field trip to stock trout in Schenectady. But the kids’ hopes for stocking the stream are quickly dashed. They learn the Department of Environmental Conservation’s new “Stream Access Verification Program” removed the location from the stocking list.

Minnesota’s Opening Day with Mr. Walleye: a logical approach

While everyone is striving for success, only a small percentage will be satisfied with the results of their opening-day fishing efforts.
According to Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Famer, “Mr. Walleye,” Gary Roach, “Success on the Minnesota fishing opener is often determined by the weather we receive the couple of weeks prior to opening day.”

New York salmon net pen-rearing project enters third year on Lake Champlain

The dozens of volunteers who gathered with fisheries biologists in mid-April near where the Saranac River meets Lake Champlain were part of an experiment that could lead to much better Atlantic salmon fishing in the big lake.
They installed six metal enclosures in the Saranac near its mouth at the lake to serve as holding pens for young salmon, hoping that spending three weeks in the water there will result in the salmon returning to spawn when they mature in two to three years.

Charter boat activity frustrating other boaters at New York’s Mexico Point state launch

The Mexico Point State Launch on Lake Ontario, in the town of Mexico, Oswego County, has been a little too crowded lately. Some locals feel charter boat captions in the area have been overstaying their welcome, leaving boats tied too long and preventing other boaters from having easy access to the launch, prompting folks to file complaints to the state.

St. Lawrence River muskie caught by New York angler is new C&R world record

It’s official! Derek Balmas, of Franklinville, N.Y. in Cattaraugus County, is now the proud holder of a world record muskellunge. His 135 centimeter (53.149-inch) St. Lawrence River muskie that he caught Nov. 8, 2022, out of Clayton is now the new world record catch-and-release muskie (based on length) through the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). If you are thinking how can a 53-inch fish be a world record, IGFA requires the measurement to take place from the tip of the nose to the inside fork of the tail. The final reading was 135 centimeters – a new record.
