A youth turkey tale that goes to plan in New York

Josh Stone (l), 13, of Hartford, N.Y. bagged his first spring gobbler on April 22. His mentor was NYODN Editor Dan Ladd (r).

A few days before the April 22-23 youth turkey hunting weekend, I headed for the hunting location in Washington County to put up a tent blind and do some quick scouting. It didn’t take long to find what I was looking for as I spotted three mature gobblers on the property. Between that sighting, and reports from the farmer who owns the property, I was confident my 13-year-old mentee, Josh Stone, of Hartford, might see some action.
