Ohio buck shot on 4-acre property in Auglaize County scores 196 4/8

Rick Place, of Sidney, says there isn’t much of a backstory to the massive buck he killed in the fall of 2022. It was more “right place at the right time.”
That right time was Oct. 28, 2022, when Place killed a 13-point buck that scored 196 4/8 non-typical. Place shot the big buck with no trail cam pictures, and no other sightings on a 4-acre piece of land.

Try a laid-back approach to get on call-shy gobblers

The last couple of seasons, hunters have thought there was a curse on the wild gobblers. They just didn’t want to gobble! It has been frustrating and bewildering. Yet the Pennsylvania Game Commission assures us that there are plenty of turkeys in the woods.
I’m not a biologist so I cannot give you scientific answers. I’m simply an avid turkey hunter since day one, so all I can tell you is what I have learned from my experience.

Meet Keng Yang: Adult-onset hunter, enthusiastic mentor

When a film about Keng Yang and his dog premiered at Pheasant Fest in February, he became something of an instant celebrity. His likeness has appeared many times in recent months online, in newspapers, and elsewhere (you may recognize him from the cover of the 2022 Minnesota Hunting & Trapping Regulations booklet).
Almost as fast, however, was his entry into hunting, which also propelled him into a life of conservation and mentorship.

Here’s what to look for in sunglasses for fishing

The only constant between all the sunglasses I own is each have lenses that block nearly all UV radiation. How do I know? I look for a label that either shows the lenses are “UV 400” or have 100% protection against UVA and UVB rays.
After that, functionality comes next and that’s almost a trial-and-error process to individualize. Here are some of the options to explore.

Wisconsin winter rated as severe in the north

The effect of the winter on deer is used to help determine the County Deer Advisory Council recommendations for antlerless deer quotas for the fall hunt.
The Bayfield Peninsula took a pounding this past winter, with consecutive heavy snows pummeling the region, including a mid-April blast that dropped more than 20 inches of heavy, wet snow in Bayfield and northern Ashland counties.

Turkey Timing Part 3: Minnesota’s E and F seasons can be fantastic

Interest in turkey hunting falls off during our Minnesota season’s waning weeks, this year May 10-16 (period E) and May 17-31 (period F). If you buy a license for E, you also get to hunt F, which is when unused tags from periods A through D become valid again.
Fishing season is upon us. But you often have the woods to yourself, and turkeys are still out there. Breeding has not stopped. That’s all good for the May turkey hunter.
