A former record saugeye of nine pounds and 27 inches was taken in the Deer Creek tailwaters in January of 1989. It has since been broken by a 14-pound fish caught in nearby Antrim Lake,

Though it may not be as acclaimed as a Berlin Lake in the same system, it does contain a sleeper largemouth bass fishery that rivals all other lakes in the area.

You’ll also catch saugeyes, channel and flathead catfish, crappies, and some bluegills in this unique, river-like lake that zigs and zags across 421 acres in parts of two counties in southeast Ohio.

Many limits will be taken, along with a sizeable number of sub-legal size fish

Most anglers fish slip boppers and leeches for limit catches of saugeyes. There is an excellent population of medium-sized fish in the 12-16-inch range. Saugeye netting results show a good population of adult saugeyes available

With very good year-classes of walleyes in 2018 and 2019, the next several years should be banner ones for walleye fishing in the Western Basin of Lake Erie.

Walleye remain the class of Lake Erie’s multi-tiered fishery.

It might seem counterintuitive, but there’s never been a 9-inch keeper limit on crappies at Cowan Lake.
