Independence has a storied reputation for not just producing good numbers of muskies, but also trophy-caliber fish.

It’s a bluegill and crappie fishery first, known for producing quality panfish within its abundance of healthy habitat in the way of vegetation to support them.

Its iconic lake trout population, an abundance of walleyes and smallmouth bass, and its northern pike – which includes the rare silver-phase pike – make it a destination lake in these parts.

It’s a 1,850-acre bowl-shaped system with an abundance of structure, vegetation, a tullibee forage base, and enough deep water to allow many of its pike to grow beyond “snake” status.

It holds a healthy crappie population, respectable largemouth bass in both numbers and size, and enough walleyes to make them worth a look.

The lakes are connected by a navigable channel, which allows fish to move between the two systems. So from a fishing standpoint, what you catch in one, you can expect to catch in the other.

Pokegama has all of the usual suspects, such as panfish, walleyes, pike, and bass. But it also has an abundance of riverine and unique fish species in the mix.

The lake probably has one of the best largemouth bass populations you’ll find in these parts.

Big Birch is loaded with a wide range of diverse structure that holds a variety of healthy fish populations.
