Backyard and Beyond: Wildlife photos from the sweet season

Wayne Kober enjoyed a three-week fishing trip to Lake of the Woods, Ontario, in June – a trip enhanced by a surprise visit from a loon family. The water birds, two adults and two chicks, paddled out one day to swim alongside his small boat as he fished in a bay.

Backyard and Beyond: The kestrel kids

Marguerite Eichelberger has been keeping an eye on a kestrel family on a friend’s property, enjoying the antics of the young falcons after fledging from their nest cavity. She was on hand to take photos as the young falcons caught and ate prey, such as June bugs, mice, and even a bat.

Backyard and beyond: The sights of summer

Darlene Herbster caught two kits engaging in play fights, then watched them chew on nearly everything around, and then nap in the sun as they waited for their parents to return.

Backyard and beyond: Arriving on schedule

In late April, it seemed as if spring weather was never going to arrive in my area, but there were positive signs. The minute ice began to leave lakes and ponds, water birds started flying in, right on schedule. Rich Carlson caught an elegant pair of red-breasted mergansers enjoying an early spring day.
