The last thing a mother gray squirrel wants to see is a red-tailed hawk landing near her nest, intent on feasting on her babies. Nick D’Addio caught the action as a big hawk menaced a squirrel, then flew off with one of her offspring.

Wood ducks arrived back in our region starting in early March, intent on raising the next generation. These handsome ducks are cavity nesters, so a pair will explore trees for a good nest site, as Mark Delaski’s photo shows.

Tundra swans were passing through the middle of the country in early March, and Erin Wortley was lucky enough to spot a big group on a local lake at sunset. “It was an amazing sight to see,” she said. These beautiful birds were on their way to breeding grounds in Alaska and northern Canada from wintering grounds along the South Atlantic coast.

Many people consider the red-winged blackbird to be the true harbinger of spring, like the dramatic male that Rich Carlson spotted at a nearby wetland.
These birds arrive in northern regions a bit earlier than do the first robins, and nearly all of them are true migrants, unlike the many stay-all-year robins.

Great blue herons engage in some “hard-water” fishing, too, as evidenced by the big bird observed by Vern Lemasters. He reports that the heron eventually was able to chip a frozen fish out of the ice.

Carla Randecker titled her amazing photo of a wintry sky, “The wondrous things you can see if you pay attention.”
While such a combination of sun halo and “sun dogs” isn’t rare, all the meteorological conditions – ice crystal shape, orientation and clarity – must be aligned to create this effect. Such sights often come before a storm, but Randecker said that didn’t happen this time, just high winds. She always carries her smartphone because she never knows what she might see while, in this case, feeding her chickens.

Jane Birr has spent a number of years sitting near her bird feeders with seeds in her hands to attract one of the most intrepid little sprites in the bird world, the black-capped chickadee. Her photo documents a rewarding moment, as a ’dee lands on her hand for sunflower seeds.

Doug Wonders noted fox tracks along a nearby river, so he set up his trail camera and was rewarded with a great photo of a fox and its reflection in the clear ice.
Scott Thiede sent in an amazing photo of flying squirrels on their nightly visit. The squirrels in the middle and at right were snapped by his motion-activated camera system, while the just-arriving one on the left was added to the image in his “digital darkroom.”
