Spring snow goose migration moves quickly as birds reach the Dakotas

That other March Madness – the annual spring snow goose migration and the hunting season that comes with it – is well under way, with birds already moving deep into North Dakota.
During the past week across the Great Plains, the midcontinent flock of lesser snow geese has been pushing north, with the highest concentrations of snows, blues, and Ross’ geese staging in several northern-latitude states, including South Dakota. But as of Tuesday morning, geese were still being reported as far south as Arkansas.

Wetland conditions poor as ducks approach Minnesota, Dakotas this spring

As the spring migration of ducks and geese spreads northward, waterfowl managers across the Upper Midwest say significant precipitation will be needed during the next several weeks to replenish soil moisture and recharge wetland basins for breeding waterfowl across the region.
As of Tuesday morning, the prairies of Minnesota and the Dakotas – key breeding areas for ducks – were dry and getting drier as winter’s minimal snowpack had melted long ago. In fact, during the past week, high winds had produced tornadoes of topsoil in western Minnesota and in parts of South Dakota.

Why pursue light geese in springtime? The reasons are many

True story: My fascination with snow geese began in bed. It was the late 1990s. I’d moved from St. Paul, Minn., to Aberdeen, S.D., only a few months earlier. Spring had sprung; warmer weather had finally started melting the snowpack after what felt like a particularly long, cold, gloomy winter.
One morning at sunup, my bedroom window cracked, the refreshingly cool spring air carried the din of something I had never heard before: the evocative, deafening barks and yelps of tens of thousands of migrating snows and blues.

Minnesota’s Pope County pheasant group keeps conservation local for over 40 years

Gary Weber has trained six hunting dogs since 1982, the year he helped form Pope County Pheasant Restoration, a conservation/hunting nonprofit organization that predates the arrival of Pheasants Forever.
He said he remembers all of them – five Chesapeake Bay retrievers and his current Labrador – fondly.
“Time flies, doesn’t it?” said Weber, the organization’s current chairman. “We had a lot of fun together.”

Minnesota foundation helps youth with life-threatening illnesses ‘just be kids’

Dan Oliver remembers.
He remembers that Lake of the Woods ice-fishing trip several years ago. One night, sitting at a lodge bar sipping an adult beverage with friends after a day on the hard water, Oliver remembers overhearing a conversation about “this foundation,” and being intrigued by it. After all, it granted outdoor wishes to sick children and wounded combat veterans.

New group forms to advocate for Minnesota bowhunters

Minnesota’s archery community has a new support and advocacy group: the Minnesota Bowhunters Association.
Rolled out in January to promote bowhunting and archery across the state, the new nonprofit organization based in Grand Rapids has a stated mission to “unite and empower bowhunters, foster inclusivity, and promote the sport of bowhunting.”

Trout Unlimited joins pollutant lawsuit against Minnesota agencies

Minnesota Trout Unlimited has joined a lawsuit by other state environmental groups to speed up efforts to address nitrate contamination in waters in southeastern Minnesota, home to roughly 700 miles of cold-water trout streams that provide some of the best trout angling in the Upper Midwest.

Process your own venison and reap the rewards

The 8-point buck – a handsome specimen of a white-tailed deer – tapped out about 50 yards to my front in a cut alfalfa field.
With about 15 minutes of shooting time left on opening day several years ago at deer camp in north-central Minnesota, I’d placed one round from my trusty .243 into the unsuspecting animal’s boiler room. It dropped nearly where it had stood – a textbook clean kill. Truth is, a novice could have made that shot. About 20 minutes later, gutting gloves up to my elbows, day tiptoeing ever closer to night, I began field-dressing my deer when a good friend chimed in.

Farm bill extension has no funding for access; how might Minnesota’s Walk-in Access program be impacted?

When Congress last month passed an extension to the federal farm bill for 2025 and avoided a government shutdown, the bill, unlike other extensions, did not include funding for a popular bipartisan federal walk-in access program important to hunters.
The Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program (VPA-HIP) funds state walk-in access programs – private land that’s open to hunters, anglers, and other outdoor recreationists. The vast majority of funding for the Minnesota DNR’s Walk-in Access program comes from VPA-HIP grants.
