Wave tracker buoys making Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods safer for anglers

It was an idea that Joe Henry had thought about, and talked about, for a while. Similar to technology used in the interest of boater safety on the Great Lakes, why couldn’t users of Minnesota’s expansive Lake of the Woods have a means to track wave action from afar? he asked.
Henry, executive director for Lake of the Woods Tourism, said the effort to make it so recently became reality: a wave height buoy system that, most importantly, offers information to better ensure angler safety on the 300,000-plus-acre water.

Streams of Thought: Minnesota DNR group to address land acquisitions in a world of wind easements

State government officials in particular and a good portion of the general public will tell you that energy generated by the winds of Minnesota is a good thing.
Just how “clean” it is will be known for sure when many of us are being fondly remembered – for our cheery demeanor, our contributions to humankind during our time on Earth, and for our fantastic homemade salsa – during holidays in the far future. At present, the state DNR has assembled an internal, multi-divisional group whose mission, boiled down, is to address issues that have arisen amid the continued proliferation of easements secured in western and southwestern Minnesota by wind-generation companies.

Streams of Thought: Expect DNR to soon make official proposal to drop Minnesota’s walleye limit

In late June, the Minnesota DNR sent forth a news release that requested the state’s anglers – and whomever else, I suppose – step to the plate and complete a questionnaire regarding “a possible reduction in the statewide walleye possession limit from six to four fish,” per the release.
I mention it today because the time is nigh that the questionnaire no longer will be available: Its expiration date is Aug. 15.

Audit of Minnesota DNR spending on wildlife management areas IDs some concerns

St. Paul — While the DNR and other vested parties await the results of a special review by the Minnesota Office of Legislative Auditor – “The Department of Natural Resources’ timber harvest decisions in wildlife management areas” – DNR officials say the department received a passing grade in a related federal government audit.

A quick chat with renowned dog trainer and product developer Tom Dokken

Across the Midwest and in Minnesota in particular, the name Tom Dokken is synonymous with hunting dog training.
And gundog-training products – the DeadFowl Trainer perhaps his most renowned creation, circa 1995. The DeadFowl was born of necessity, as were other products Dokken aided in development for the purpose of building a hunting dog.

Appeals court rules against Minnesota deer farmers

Is it the end of the line for Minnesota deer farmers fighting new laws, directed at their vocation and enacted during the 2023 legislative session?
Following the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision Monday that affirms an early U.S. District Court rejection of a lawsuit – brought by the Minnesota Deer Farmers Association and a host of deer farmers themselves against several state agencies and officials – that conclusion could be drawn. Steve Porter, secretary of the MDFA and owner of Steve Porter’s Trophy Whitetail near Lake Bronson in northern Minnesota, however, says not so fast.

Streams of Thought: Cases of extreme swimmer’s itch on Minnesota waters a tricky situation

I don’t believe, in my two and a half decades of dedication to this publication, that I’ve ever written about swimmer’s itch – unless I once whined about contracting the allergic reaction several years ago after doing some dog training at a local lake in summertime.
But here we are, in July 2025, and I’ve crossed the threshold into swimmer’s itch reporting. I found it somewhat intriguing, and you might, too.

Extreme cases of ‘swimmer’s itch’ in parts of Minnesota put mergansers in crosshairs

DNR officials were faced with a decision: whether or not to allow the take – killing – of common mergansers on two Minnesota waters where lakeshore residents say swimmer’s itch has become more than an inconvenience. They say it’s moved into territory that could more accurately be defined as a health risk.
Late last week, the DNR rejected a proposed permit that would’ve allowed for the capture and euthanizing of up to 100 mergansers from Pelican Lake in west-central Minnesota’s Otter Tail County, as well as up to 30 from Bay Lake in Crow Wing County.

An increased limit coming on Minnesota’s Mille Lacs? Walleye take at one-fifth of state quota

For the second season in a row, the Lake Mille Lacs state-angler walleye kill remained at the end of June far below a quota set during state DNR-tribal co-management negotiations last winter. The difference: A year ago, open-water fishing remained catch and release only through mid-August, after which two fish were allowed to be harvested.
This year, the regulations allow for the keeping of two fish (17 inches or greater, and only one of them may be over 20 inches).
