Western Minnesota conservation officer seeking info on swans poached in Pope County

A western Minnesota DNR conservation officer is seeking information regarding what appears to be the poaching of four trumpeter swans, the breasted-out carcasses of which were left in rural garbage containers in Leven Township in Pope County.
DNR Enforcement CO Andrew Ladzinski, who’s stationed in Glenwood, said he received a call on Monday, Oct. 7, from a rural resident along County Road 30. The resident stated that while in the process of standing up tipped-over containers at the end of his driveway, he discovered two black garbage bags inside – odd, because his garbage bags are white.

Pheasant numbers were high, the air was cool, a light breeze blew on clear skies, the grassy cover was moist with dew, and nearly all corn had been harvested from fields across southern Minnesota.
That is my dream for a pheasant-hunting opener, although I’m quite certain it’s a dream never to be realized – much like my dream last night of winning a $100,000 fishing tournament: disputed, yes, but a victory nonetheless.

Review of WMA timber harvest in Minnesota highlights lack of plans, USFWS and DNR employee concerns

A Minnesota Office of the Legislative Auditor special review of the Minnesota DNR’s harvest of timber on state wildlife management areas became available Tuesday. It offers recommendations for the DNR regarding the state’s 1.3 million acres of WMAs, addressing agency wildlife manager concerns and DNR leadership actions that two years ago led to the suspension of federal funding to the state.
The review also includes responses from DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen regarding the OLA’s many recommendations.

Streams of Thought: Minnesota duck opener lived down to expectations; but a good pheasant opener awaits?

Sadly, expectations were notably low in our particular corner of southwestern Minnesota for the 2025 duck-hunting opener this past Saturday. So low, in fact, that a couple of members of our longtime duckin’ crew opted to address other responsibilities rather than spend two mornings slough-side.
I personally know a black Labrador retriever who’s likely disappointed she didn’t get to do – not once – the one thing that’s right there in the name of her breed.

How Minnesota’s forested acres – on Wildlife Management Areas and in state forests, alike – are managed for timber harvest matters.
Few know that better than Tim Quincer who, on Sept. 9, retired as a DNR Fish and Wildlife Division forest wildlife coordinator. It’s a position he’d held since 1999, and just part of his 38-year career with the agency. It’s a unique position, determining what’s best for wildlife amid pressures to turn trees into “green” for the state.

Better things yet to come for Minnesota bowhunters after hot opening weekend

Archery deer hunting began last weekend – just in time for a September warmup that included temperatures that soared to around 90 degrees in southern parts of Minnesota, and lingered in the 80s for much of the rest of the state. Those temperatures held deep into the work week.
That, as would be expected, wasn’t a recipe for successful deer harvest, or a mad rush to deer stands on Saturday and Sunday.

Minnesota pheasant harvest up, duck harvest and overall hunter numbers down in 2024 small-game survey

The Minnesota DNR reported last week the results of its annual small-game hunter survey, with pheasant harvest in 2024 increasing about 14% from a year ago, duck harvest decreasing about 14% from the previous season, and ruffed grouse harvest roughly the same as a season earlier.
The number of small-game hunters last year was down “slightly” from 2023, the DNR reported, and was 5% below the 10-year average.

Minnesota counties now digging into implications of change to shotgun zone for deer hunting

When state legislators earlier this year approved the elimination of Minnesota’s “slug zone” for deer hunting, it appeared debate was closed regarding an issue that had reared its head during the past several sessions. Firearms deer hunters in that zone, which includes most of the southern portion of the state, would be allowed to use rifles for deer hunting beginning with the 2026 season.
But there was a caveat, and it’s proved to be a reason that intense discussions about the shotgun zone are far from over: Individual county boards, per the legislation, may choose to “opt out,” thereby retaining a shotgun-only zone.

Streams of Thought: Jobs (mostly) well done preparing for the deer season

It was to be a big weekend in mid-August, planned for the annual checking/maintenance of ladder stands and the pruning of excessive vegetative growth around said stands. It’s become a tradition of its own, and if it doesn’t inspire excitement about the upcoming bow season for whitetails, I’m not sure what will.
A year ago, I might’ve argued the tradition be disbanded, following an adventure into the woods during which heavy, 90-degree air encouraged insects of the biting variety (deer flies as well as mosquitoes) to descend en masse. This year’s excursion brought with it no such evils, as visiting high school friend and bowhunting buddy Gregg and I armed ourselves with tools and gear that might be required to make our stands hunt-ready.
