Ron Schara: A brown trout fantasy that almost came true, but still eludes me

Feeling sorry for him, I handed him the fishing rod.
Oh my, yes. I can still remember that fateful moment frozen in a time warp of stupidity. What happened to my greatest angling fantasy at the moment? What was I thinking? Obviously, I wasn’t.
You need to understand: In the backwaters of a fisherman’s mind linger rare and improbable angling fantasies.

Ron Schara: Anglers rejoice as another Minnesota fishing opener approaches

Opening Day in Minnesota doesn’t mean baseball. Or the State Fair. Nope. Opening Day in Minnesota is the first day of a love story: Minnesotans and walleyes.
I wrote something similar a few years ago, but nothing has changed. Nor have our major Minnesota holidays: Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Opening Day of fishing.

Ron Schara: In 2024, resolve to be involved in outdoor issues

New Year’s resolutions seem to be going out of style. Just as well, probably. Typically they’re promises to ourselves that are not kept. I know. I’m good at breaking resolutions.
As proof, the day I quit cigarettes was not the first day of January. It was supposed to be. I lied to myself, my friends, my family about giving up the habit on the first day of a new year.

Deer and vehicle collisions remain a serious problem in Minnesota

There’s one deer season in Minnesota that doesn’t require a hunting license. It’s expensive, however.

It’s called the car-deer collision season. The collisions peak from October through December, keeping Minnesota among the Top 10 states in the nation for deer strikes. In reality, however, the season never really ends on the state’s highways and byways.

Dock dues on Minnesota public waters: Genius? Or the musings of a madman?

I think this is a novel idea. Curious if you agree. Here’s the idea: The DNR should start charging dock space rent on public waters.
You might already be rolling your eyes. You might already be sending a nasty comment to me for being so dumb. Fine, we all are entitled to our opinions, you and I. Unless your mind is closed, hear me out. Almost every lake home or cabin has a dock occupying public water that’s owned by the public for the public’s use. There are thousands of docks on state lakes.

Remembering Jimmy Robinson, a Minnesota duck-hunting legend

On the day a Minnesota duck-hunting legend died, duck hunting died a little, too. Jimmy Robinson, gone at 88 on June 21, 1986.
You may not understand.
Many Minnesota duck hunters – possibly a majority – will say, ‘’Jimmy who?’’ And that’s OK. Time and legends move on.
I was fortunate enough to know Jimmy and hang with him a few times. Now, as another duck season rolls around, I think about him again. What would Jimmy think of early teal seasons, higher bag limits, and puzzling duck forecasts by state and federal duck counters?

A longtime angling advocate, Minnesota’s Frank Schneider Jr. would’ve approved of 2023 support for fishing

This is a good time to remember Frank Schneider Jr. Until he died in 2005 at the age of 86, Frank was a one-man force on behalf of fishing. Unpaid and unafraid, Frank attended countess legislative hearings and/or testified before lawmakers in support of good fishing laws or in opposition to stupid bills.

Ron Schara: Of Minnesota’s opening days and obituaries

My memory of the 2014 Minnesota fishing opener also has not and will not fade ever. I can still see my younger brother, Robert, on the end of a dock, waiting for a bite on Bowstring Lake. He was wrapped in a blanket and was sitting in a wheelchair. A year earlier, Bro’ Robert was running his own boat and declaring himself to be the ’Walleye Whisperer.’’

Fishing in Minnesota in 2023: Controversies reign

We like to think that fishing is the simple life – kids on docks waiting for bobbers to go down, watching sunsets or sunrises, frogs croaking, fillets frying, friends bonding in a boat, cold beer on a hot summer’s day.
Yah, that’s nice and wonderful, but it ain’t always that way. Especially these days in Minnesota where the grand pursuit of angling seems endlessly involved in controversial issues.
