When you cast an idea into unknown waters, such as the Minnesota Legislature, sometimes it succeeds, sometimes it sinks, and sometimes you wonder if lawmakers are listening or if they give a damn.
There’s a 125-year-old fish hatchery on Warner Road in St. Paul that’s being held together with duct tape. It’s the only fish hatchery in the metro region. It’s too discombobulated to allow tours for school kids. It’s an embarrassment for a state of Minnesota, where fishing is a lifestyle and a $6.6 billion-plus economic boost to the state’s economy.

Minnesota’s “Boss Tom” is strutting away.
Tom Glines recently announced he’s retiring after more than 30 years of gobbling on behalf of Minnesota’s wild turkey population and the state’s growing flock of turkey hunters. Glines is stepping down in mid-January as director of development for five states, including Minnesota, for the National Wild Turkey Federation.

The young Minnesota deer hunter explained: ‘’I saw the doe come out and I raised my gun. But then her two fawns came out. I’m not shooting her.’
The kid is under 14 years old, so what do you think? Poor decision? Hunting is shooting? Soft heart? Get over it, kid. Sympathy has no place in the woods; shoot the SOB! Good decision? Your decision was fine, kid. Compassion as a hunter is always admirable.
I’m on the kid’s side. And I’m also, as an aging hunter, in the sixth stage of a hunter’s life.

The eight-member citizens commission for the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department voted recently to continue pitting hunters against hunters. It’s nothing new.
In this case, members of the South Dakota Wildlife Federation packed a commission meeting and demanded a reduction in how many nonresidents are allowed to hunt during the spring turkey season in the Black Hills.

I screwed up. A fella talked to me at Game Fair and said my recent column in Outdoor News about my great skills as a trapper of pocket gophers included a big error.
