Want a fun turkey-hunting experience this spring? Just add water

As I paddled across the calm lake, I stopped briefly to turn and admire the beautiful tom turkey riding behind me. The sun shone brightly on the glorious colors that adorned my latest turkey harvest.
I was happy that day. The best-laid plan had not gone awry. In fact, it had worked to perfection. Pouring a cup of coffee and lighting a good cigar, I took time to celebrate. As the kayak rocked gently on the water’s swells, I took stock of how I had gotten there.

Western Minnesota offers enough spring snow geese for the DIY hunter

Not every waterfowler has the good fortune to live along a snow goose migration route. But every spring, the sounds of first pairs of Canada geese are heard in our area of western Minnesota. That’s a signal to those of us who are fortunate.
It’s time to prepare for what many of we old-timers consider a minor miracle: the opportunity to hunt light geese (snows, blues, Ross’s) during spring – once considered an impossibility to those of us “of a certain age.” That makes us thankful.

How a plan to catch a record fish came together in 1982 on Minnesota’s Pomme de Terre River

When a world-record catch is made while fishing, a great deal of luck is involved.
Now, I’m not saying the angler is not a good fisherman. For most people, one day, out of the blue, the hook is set and suddenly, that fish of your dreams is at the end of the line. When it happened to me, that wasn’t the scenario.
I knew that day in 1982 that I was absolutely certain to catch a record fish – it was part of my plan. There was no technological assistance in finding that fish, either.

Tolling for waterfowl: Is your dog up for this unique tactic?

What would it be like to see a little dog luring hundreds of geese to within less than 10 yards in front of your blind? Unbelievable?
No really. I’d had that scenario play out on several occasions in the past, so I wasn’t the least bit surprised. It’s called tolling, and it’s as old as waterfowling itself.

Top tips to get your birds as pheasant season winds down

As the big rooster rose from the prairie grass, I was navigating lumpy ground created by a herd of cattle that had grazed here during a wet year. Cattle make a mess of pheasant habitat for a hunter. But we have to hunt that ground, clumps and all.
As I raised my gun that day to take my shot, my foot slid off the hummock. I launched a terrible shot and watched as my ring-necked, long-tailed prize rooster sailed away. After that, I thought about why good footwork would have given me a much better chance of hitting that pheasant.

When the north wind blows and ducks arrive, be there

With the north wind bucking, it was time to get to the slough and greet the new arrivals of waterfowl that wing into the Minnesota prairies every time the old northern howls.
For 60-plus years, our crew has been celebrating the waterfowling season by gathering for a reunion hunt. This year, Donny Lien joined us after driving from his home in Plainview. Steve and Sue Aagesen came from Paynesville, and my son Will and I traveled only six miles from Appleton to “make the scene,” as we used to say.
