Wisconsin ready to honor Aldo Leopold on 75th anniversary of Sand County Almanac

Several anniversaries come to mind as we approach Leopold Week, the annual celebration of legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold and his classic book, A Sand County Almanac.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the book’s first printing in 1949. It has since been translated into 15 languages and sold well over 2 million copies. This year marks the 25th celebration of the original Leopold Weekend, when the professor’s fans in Lodi, Wis.  – population 2,893 at the time – gathered in the town’s library in March 2000 to read aloud A Sand County Almanac cover to cover.

A quick chat with Mark Kenyon of Wired to Hunt

Michigan’s Mark Kenyon isn’t offended if you call him a deer nerd or whitetail geek.
Although Kenyon self-describes as a “passionate deer hunter,” those other labels fit, too. He built his work and career around white-tailed deer, after all. Kenyon, 36, launched his “Wired To Hunt” digital-media platform in summer 2008 while a college intern in New York City. And although he spent each business day working for a Manhattan advertising agency, he labored most nights and weekends in his apartment, quietly building the foundation for his digital company.

Famed Wisconsin professor Tom Heberlein hunted til the end at Old T

Prof. Tom Heberlein was forever vigilant about his deer camp’s buckpole, even though it hung empty more often than heavy each November.
When hunting grouse in October, Heberlein often paused outside his Ashland County, Wis., shack, cracked his double-barreled 20-gauge, and eyed the buckpole lashed to the big spruces bordering the camp’s driveway.

Commentary: Bird, animal names fraught with historical and ‘cutesy’ perils

Let’s hope the American Society of Mammalogists is tracking efforts by the American Ornithological Society to rename all birds that honor people, and shouting, “Buck pellets!”
If you missed it in November, those zany ornithologists announced that naming birds after famous people can be harmful enough to decrease “the focus, appreciation, or consideration of the birds themselves.” But rather than evaluate each bird based on its namesake’s sins or merits, the organization plans to dump all namesakes.

Want the best experience from a mountain hunt? Here are important factors to consider

When prospective clients called a now-retired Colorado outfitter to discuss horseback elk hunts into the San Juan Mountains, they often asked if he could guarantee at least one shooting opportunity.
His response seldom varied:
“If you don’t arrive in good shape, I can’t even guarantee a good time.”

Patrick Durkin: New age of deer hunting brings little joy in Wisconsin

You might assume state hunters were happy they shot a deer every other second during November’s nine-day gun season.
You’re wrong, of course. Hunters registered 85,773 bucks and 89,123 antlerless deer during the gun season, which offered about 10 hours of legal shooting daily. The season lasts 90 hours, or 5,400 minutes, or 324,000 seconds. So, yes, to kill those 174,896 deer during the Nov. 18-26 season, hunters shot just over a half-deer (0.54) per second.
