Turkey hatch in Ohio on the upswing again in 2023
Ohio’s turkey population is showing signs of bouncing back after a rough string of years that produced poor spring hatches.
Ohio’s poult index, a metric used to estimate nest success for the popular game bird, was above average for the third year in a row, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The 2023 Ohio index was 2.8 poults per hen, above the 10-year average of 2.7 poults per hen.

Ohio Insider: It appears 2023 walleye hatch on Lake Erie was again superb
By all accounts, it appears that the 2023 spring walleye hatch on Lake Erie was again superb.
Of course, the official report won’t come out until December when all of the interagency data comes in from Ontario. But, rumblings are that the hatch was again an exceptional one in Lake Erie’s waters. Based on 2023 trawling surveys that the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife conducts in Ohio waters, the hatch appears to have been another ultra-successful one.

On Ohio’s Dow Lake close to Athens, saugeye prospects are up
Just a few miles outside of Athens in southeastern Ohio, a thin ribbon of water meanders through Strouds Run State Park.
The two-mile long Dow Lake is only 153 acres and less than 300 yards wide at its most expansive point. It’s smallish stature, however, makes it easily accessible for almost any point on the lake. For angling prospects, that’s a good thing. It’s nothing that’s going to break any records, but there’s a fair number of fish at Dow Lake to whet the appetite.

Ohio’s firearms whitetail hunt is shaping up; here’s what to know
Though it’s still a little ways off, Ohio’s deer hunters are already gearing up for the week-long firearms season after Thanksgiving.
This year’s firearms week for deer is Nov. 27 through Dec. 3. Another weekend of gun hunting will be offered on Dec. 16-17.
So far, temperatures have been dropping across the Buckeye State, which has been a boon for bowhunters.
“This fall has been unusual, but in a great way,” says Mike Tonkovich, deer program administrator for the ODNR Division of Wildlife.

Ohio Division of Wildlife invested with record funds from state, projects planned
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Legislature have made an unprecedented investment in Ohio’s natural resources in the latest budget bill.
In the bill, the ODNR Division of Wildlife received $16.9 million in general revenue funds and another $14 million for shooting range improvements. These are record amounts of capital improvement dollars afforded to the Division of Wildlife, said Pete Novotny, an assistant wildlife chief.
