Commentary: Is it time to tweak the Ohio muzzleloader hunt?

Is it time for Ohio to consider an amendment to the muzzleloader season? Current muzzleloaders are hardly primitive, just narrowed down to one shot. What is the difference in weaponry other than the lack of a cartridge and the difficulty and expense of loading it?
It has been a few years since I have used a modern muzzleloading rifle to participate in the four-day season of early January. When I started, the first season occurred in the mid-70s, late October I believe. It was called primitive weapons season.

Training is key to your accuracy with a rifle; here’s how to improve

The Olympic shooter from Turkey displayed shooting skill at its finest. Earning a silver medal, it was all him – no leather shooting jacket, eye blind, nor any of the popular trappings deemed necessary by some of the other shooting competitors.
The most accurate pistols money could buy were likely there. I picture him grabbing his garden gun from the garage, because he knew it well. The Olympics displayed how easy it is to miss your mark. Having all the right stuff was not enough.

Good catches can be had for Ohio trout if you know where to fish in the fall

Although spring is the popular time to go, a fair amount of trout fishing can be had in the fall. Rivers offer opportunity well into the winter. The few harboring trout are good ones, flowing through places where it is worthwhile just to be there.
Catching a trout is the goal, but the payout is more than that.

What to consider when deciding if reloading ammunition is for you

Is reloading right for you? Yes and no. Yes  – if you love shooting and do a fair amount. No – if you are in it for the money. There are trade-offs to any major activity. And this is no small decision if you are going to do it right. To safely reload ammunition it takes an investment in equipment, components, and time. A lot of time.

Use summer to determine what deer rifle you want to use this fall

The week of regular gun season is the defining moment for your choice of a deer rifle.
You may not need to fire a shot to find how well it fits your needs. When my choice does not go as planned, I look for another. It often goes that way. Resale is disappointing, but buying another hunting implement, new or used, takes the pain away.
Shooting what your friends own can help inform your decision to buy, as can talking to a stranger at the range. If I see something that catches my eye, I ask them how they like it. I sometimes get an offer to shoot. I have met many helpful shooters who were tickled to talk about their guns.

Heat of summer? Tie on a topwater for great bass action on these Ohio waters

What is more exciting than seeing a bass smash your lure? Not much, not when a topwater bite is hot. It has been a summertime ritual for generations. Shallow water is where much of the action is, those places affected the most by weather, physical cover, and boat traffic.
Mechanics play a role as well, the moving parts of a lure that transmit sound. Water pushing surfaces too, such as a cupped face, creating pressure waves when retrieved.

Finding the perfect setup for catching summer saugeye

Catching a saugeye in the summer is an ongoing lesson in humility. The fruitless casting in July can get old. Soon after a lackluster trip I return with a new idea, only to feel like Thomas McGuane, who famously said, “I may be the wrong person for my life.”
I have learned enough to catch them, just not as well as I expected. Finding them was the hardest lesson. Living on South Bass Island on Lake Erie taught me going at night time is the surest way to find them. Cast from shore, starting at sunset. We know walleyes come to the shallows in the fading light. I would later learn saugers and saugeyes do the same.
