The week of regular gun season is the defining moment for your choice of a deer rifle.
You may not need to fire a shot to find how well it fits your needs. When my choice does not go as planned, I look for another. It often goes that way. Resale is disappointing, but buying another hunting implement, new or used, takes the pain away.
Shooting what your friends own can help inform your decision to buy, as can talking to a stranger at the range. If I see something that catches my eye, I ask them how they like it. I sometimes get an offer to shoot. I have met many helpful shooters who were tickled to talk about their guns.
