Ohio DNR makes investment in blue catfish program

Look no further than Hoover Reservoir for an example of success with Ohio’s trophy blue catfish program. Alum Creek Reservoir is one of the more recent lakes to be stocked. You can almost feel the anticipation for a trophy blue catfish fishery at Alum Creek.
Anglers flock to Hoover for a chance at the largest species in Ohio. License plates in the parking lots are showing up from distant counties, and even out of state plates every now and then.

What does the future hold for ice fishing in Ohio this year?

By the end of August, I started watching the weather outlook for winter. The temperature in the North Pacific foreshadows what to expect.
It is speculation at its best, depicted through various computer models. An outcome with loose certainty for some, for me, it spells the chances of ice fishing in Ohio.

Ohio’s lesser known rivers hold plenty of promise, too

Ernest Miller Hemingway could have done anything he wanted. Born in Oak Park, a well-to-do suburb of Chicago, he passed on college. A job with the Kansas City Star appealed to him.
He worked for the paper less than a year. It was long enough to form a writing habit. Nested from the writing style of the paper, his style eventually lead to the Nobel Prize in Literature and a Pulitzer for fiction.

Deer with a handgun? It’s possible and even productive in some instances

Technology has not made handgun hunting any easier. The stakes are summed up nicely in Ohio’s 2023-24 deer harvest statistics. Less than 1% (526) of deer were shot with a handgun.
Getting within range is often less difficult than making the shot. When a deer shows up, you realize you are not plinking paper. Who needs an EKG to check their heart? Just go deer hunting. It helps when you are prepared to use a handgun for hunting.

.350 Legend: A worthy option for Ohio deer hunters

After a life of 12-gauge slugs and .50 caliber muzzleloaders, the .350 Legend is almost too good to be true for deer season. Not everyone thinks it is a sweet cartridge to shoot; some feel it is not enough gun. I do not understand why hunters feel undergunned with a .35 caliber bullet fired from a rifle. How much gun do you need to put a deer down?
The .350 Legend is compared to the .30-30, a cartridge claimed to have accounted for more deer than any other.

Want the perfect hunting rifle? Build your own

It is no secret you get what you pay for when it comes to a rifle. The problem for some of the straight-walled cartridge rifles is that basic field models are the only options due to the nature of the cartridge. It is designed for short range. Being a relative newcomer to the market does not help.
A low-cost rifle can fall somewhere between poor fit and finish to a lower quality trigger and stock. Then there is the quality of the barrel and receiver, very important when it comes to accuracy.

John Tertuliani: A brief history on reloading ammunition

As long as I can remember, reloading presses stood in the basement. Two for shotgun shells and the single-stage for rifle cartridges.
Dad let me reload as soon as I was man enough to ditch the diapers. Looking back, I cannot believe he let me do the entire process. Perhaps he knew I would do exactly as he said, with or without him. Maybe weighing gunpowder bored him beyond his interest level. I trickled out every load of 4831 to the exact weight, having to take a couple of the rod-shaped (stick) granules out if the balance beam scale went over the line.

Ohio’s hybrid striper record falls for second time in 2024

Larry Powers was fishing the waters of Caesars Creek Lake in Clinton County, Ohio. It was Friday, Aug. 16, a planned trip with an old friend who wanted to go fishing. They set out to catch a muskie or two. Powers was using a balsa crankbait on 17-pound test monofilament. It was an LC Powers crankbait, one of his own; he makes them at home.
It was this homemade crankbait that helped him catch the new state record hybrid striped bass.

Take proper care when mounting your scope

The scope is getting more attention these days. Folks are buying scopes costing as much as their rifles. Manufacturers respond to the market demand by producing higher quality products. They are making scopes more durable, more weatherproof, and more capable of ballistic adjustment.
There is more to mounting a scope than just clamping it down. The amount of care put toward this task can enhance or hinder the accuracy potential of your rifle.
