Ohio DNR makes investment in blue catfish program

Blue catfish broodstock are moved at the Hebron State Hatchery on Nov. 5, ranging in weight from 29 to 46 pounds. When the catfish reach 50 pounds, they are removed (culled) and released. (Photo by John Tertuliani)

Look no further than Hoover Reservoir for an example of success with Ohio’s trophy blue catfish program. Alum Creek Reservoir is one of the more recent lakes to be stocked. You can almost feel the anticipation for a trophy blue catfish fishery at Alum Creek.
Anglers flock to Hoover for a chance at the largest species in Ohio. License plates in the parking lots are showing up from distant counties, and even out of state plates every now and then.
