Jigs and swimbaits are a simple but effective approach for spring bass

Each year, I grow less interested in what technology brings to largemouth bass fishing. My age is the reason. I enjoy catching them as I always have – with jigs.

Wallace Stegner summed up these feelings with eloquence. “There is a special quality that people have when they have the dignity of scarcity.” The jig became as good as live bait when I started fishing on my own. It turned into a necessity when I saw how fun and effective jigs were to use.

Agencies studying fish movement on Ohio’s Great Miami River

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the Miami Conservancy District (MCD), the Ohio DNR, and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA), combined resources in a cooperative effort to assess fish movement through the Taylorsville Dam in the Great Miami River.
The agencies began a tagging study to see if the dam inhibits fish movement. Data collection is planned for approximately one year. Compilation of results will begin in late 2025 or early 2026.

Take advantage of Ohio’s early spring steelhead opportunities

My first steelhead fishing trip was one to remember. Conneaut Creek ran high and turbidity clouded the flow. I could not see my feet. We had the place to ourselves, not another angler in sight. It was a tough day for fly-fishing.
Vince LaConte guided me. A Division of Wildlife fisheries biologist at the time, I credit him, Phil Hillman, among others, with putting Ohio on the steelhead map. At the end of the day, I thought the few fish we caught were the only ones there.

Options abound for your next coyote rifle

With deer gun season behind us, it is a good time to grab your coyote rifle. The breeding season for these canines runs through February.
Coyotes pay no mind to where you think they should appear. Where they stop as they run toward the calling is another guess; a long way off is the safe bet. A flat-shooting rifle is what you need for one of those long shots.

Here are Ohio’s best winter steelhead bets

Drought conditions in 2024 hindered the start of the annual steelhead migration in Ohio. Anglers found fall-run fish staging along the Lake Erie shoreline more than they did moving upstream in the rivers.
The rains finally came, the water soaked in the ground, without affecting the river levels as normally seen. It wasn’t until after Christmas when rains filled the rivers. A welcomed relief, the water rising, but tough conditions.

John Tertuliani: River fishing one last time before winter sets in is good for the soul

River reconnaissance is my idea of R and R. No actual recon is in order, not for the Scioto River in Ohio. Flowing close to home, I know it well. Come December, I want to be out in the water one last time. Winter is about to seize it until spring. I need to know if this is it.
Flowing water has always appealed to me. Standing in it for long periods has become a source of healing. Having the water to myself, me and the animals, a time for reflection.

John Tertuliani: Memories of long-ago come flooding back each deer opener

I was 13 when an opportunity for a rifle hunt came together in north-central Pennsylvania, the region where my grandfather immigrated to and met the woman who would become my grandmother. The hunt started a generation or two before me. It was how they fed their families. Her parents had immigrated, as well.
A way of life for them, with close friends becoming members of the hunting family. For me, it was passage to the inner circle of heritage hunters who went after everything allowed, especially whitetails. My journey began in a World War II-looking Jeep.

Winter project: An AR build on your own

The Armalite Rifle, our beloved AR platform, began as a modular concept in 1954. The company set out to produce something reliable and versatile. The concept revolutionized how we think about rifles. An AR could not be more practical for those who like to shoot rifles.
Buying a completed rifle was my first interest. There are a lot of parts, and a guaranteed learning curve. Buying a completed rifle would be the less expensive route. A build piece by piece is the most expensive way to go.
