Ohio’s post-spawn crappies can be had with the right tactics

Ohio’s 2025 spring was cooler than normal and wet, not the typical crappie spawning conditions I have come to know and love. The summer months may bring more surprises. One thing is for sure, crappies have moved away from their shallow-water spawning areas.
Run down from the rigors of spawning, some lack the feeding aggression displayed before the spawn. Maybe this is why some anglers dismiss their chances of finding willing biters.

Smallmouths offer good practice for Ohio steelhead anglers

Steelhead fishing reminds me of deer season. When hunting the rut during the second week of November or during the regular gun season, you will have company. In the same light, countless other anglers know when it is a good time to go for steelhead. Your plans may go out the window as soon as you arrive.
Driving more than two hours to reach the nearest river is my limiting factor. If I lived close by, I would go more often, try to find less occupied times, but that is not practical.

Reload your own straight-wall cartridges

It has been said that straight-walled cartridges can be a challenge to reload. I have experienced no reason to feel this way. I enjoy reloading them more than shouldered cartridges.
For those willing to try, the equipment and information on how to reload is better than ever. Most of the information is reliable. Some believe case lubrication is no longer necessary, not with the newer dies made of carbide or titanium nitride. I caution against this.

Time to think summer saugeyes in Ohio

Higher water is rarely a problem when using live bait for summer saugeyes. Using artificials may pose more of a challenge. Crankbaits can sometimes save the day, but not always. My challenge begins with where to find saugeyes, given the weather and water conditions that day.
They will feed, given the chance, to make up for the days spent navigating the higher flow. I go after the peak, when water starts settling down.

Fly-fishing piquing your interest? This will help you get started

Some say fly fishing is a science. Your opinion comes from how much fishing experience you have at the time and your age. Your value of fly-fishing can be complex or carefree, your choice.
Are there any secrets? If there are, one to remember is ignoring the standards others choose to follow. Let go of any concerns you may have about getting started. Consider it a personal challenge to go fishing, one with a quiet, unassuming cadence.

New offering by Columbus Zoo highlights conservation efforts for more ‘secretive’ species

The Ohio Center for Wildlife Conservation will officially open its doors to Columbus Zoo guests as part of the all-new North America Trek region in late May, 2025. Officials are excited to bring the public closer to the local conservation initiatives spearheaded by the Columbus Zoo and The Wilds.
In a cooperative effort with the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife, the focus is on our more secretive species, those that often live near us and we may know little about.

On the search for what can be elusive big bluegills in Ohio

My favorite fish comes down to a choice between the smallmouth bass and the bluegill. Everyone understands the smallmouth. But the bluegill? Not so much, not to the level of the black basses or the walleyes. For eating, I prefer bluegills above all else. Yellow perch is the only equal contender in my mind.

Would saugers compete with walleyes in Lake Erie? Reintroduction talks continue for Ohio waters

The process has been a long one. John Hageman wrote an Ohio Outdoor News feature about sauger restoration back in 2012. Who knows if it was the first discussion in recent times, when Ohio Division of Wildlife officials pondered another attempt to restore sauger in Lake Erie. They must have faced tough questions with no easy answers.
Two of the questions the division faces today concern the state of Lake Erie and habitat.

White bass fill the void after Ohio’s spring walleye run

White bass migrations occur throughout Ohio. The average migration varies with location (river or lake tributary) and latitude. It starts as a trickle. Catchable numbers arrive as April turns into May. I try to arrive during a peak, which is difficult to predict from a long distance away.
Temperature and rainfall have a strong influence on the strength of the migration.
