Here’s how to catch fish using Santee Cooper Rigs

Designed for drifting, the Santee Cooper Rig consists of simply a barrel swivel, slip bobber, a leader, and hook on line’s end. It can be used for multiple species, but John Tertuliani finds the rig developed by KC Nelms in Georgia particularly effective for catfish. (Photos by John Tertuliani)

Credit for the Santee Cooper Rig is given to K.C. Nelms, an angler from northeast Georgia. He often fished the Santee Cooper Lakes region of South Carolina in the 1980s. At first, I had no interest in trying it. I felt my way of rigging for catfish was close enough to be just as effective.
My opinion changed when the blue catfish program began in Ohio a little over 10 years ago.
