House panel holds hearing on Pennsylvania deer opener as many have their say

The House Game and Fisheries Committee on Feb. 3 held a legislative hearing on the push to restore the Monday opening day of deer season in Pennsylvania. It didn’t break any new ground.
State Rep. Brian Smith, R-Punxsutawney, a member of the committee, recently reintroduced his bill to return the Monday after Thanksgiving opener (House Bill 70). The legislation has 12 co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Pennsylvania readers not fans of recent story that ran

When we needed a filler story last issue, I chose the piece about “Buzzard man” in Ohio, who has killed 12,000 groundhogs, even though the story made me feel a bit uncomfortable. (I find it unseemly when someone brags about outlandish hunting and fishing exploits.) But we had a great photo of the guy, he is ex-military and we were on deadline, so I pulled the trigger. (See what I did there?)
Turns out, the Buzzard man story bothered long-time reader Joe McDonald, of McClure, Pa., way more than it did me, but for an entirely different reason. And he made some valid points.

How do Canada geese respond to hunting pressure? They didn’t flee far in Pennsylvania study

Geese appear to understand when and where hunting takes place but are willing to risk the danger to stay close to resources and their primary habitats, according to a new study led by researchers at Penn State.
In findings recently published in Landscape Ecology, the researchers reported that when managing a mixed landscape wildlife management area (WMA) comprising cropland, forest, lake and wetlands for both waterfowl and human use, providing sufficient spatial refuge for geese may help buffer the effects of hunting.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Nominate your choice for Pennsylvania Outdoor News’ Person of the Year

This year, as we have done annually for about two decades, we will be naming our Pennsylvania Outdoor News Person of the Year.
If you are aware of someone in our state who has had a positive impact on the community of hunters, fishermen and others who value the outdoors, habitat, water quality, ecology education and public policy affecting conservation – and deserves recognition – please let us know.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Fewer Pennsylvania elk tags for non-residents?

A common topic of angry letters over the years has been about too many out-of-state hunters drawing Pennsylvania elk tags. The Game Commission’s Wildlife Management Committee finally addressed the issue in a meeting Dec. 19, agreeing to limit the number of elk licenses that can be drawn by nonresidents annually to 10%.

Study on central Pennsylvania streams shows harmful contaminants

Pollutants known as “contaminants of emerging concern” or chemicals that could potentially harm human health and have been found in the environment, including pesticides, ingredients from personal care products, pharmaceuticals and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are increasingly found in streams and lakes.
A team led by researchers at Penn State recently demonstrated the accuracy and utility of a new method to find even very low levels of these substances in surface waters.

A quick chat with Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever lobbyist Ariel Wiegard

Ariel Wiegard, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever vice president of government affairs, leads advocacy efforts to advance the mission of the habitat organization with lawmakers.
She’s a lobbyist, and proud of her role – she sees it as essential.
“When we do training for our new employees about what advocacy is and what it means to be an advocate, we always start off by saying it’s actually your First Amendment right,” she said.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Clarifying a photo caption error from Pa. elk season

I’m worried. Maybe folks aren’t reading this paper the way they used to. Almost 22 years ago, when we started this publication, if we screwed up, readers let us know about it in no uncertain terms. But we made a serious mistake in a Page 1 photo caption last issue and didn’t hear a peep.
