Notes off a soiled cuff: What is limiting the growth potential of Pennsylvania’s elk herd?

Living part time in Pennsylvania’s elk range for awhile, not long ago, I became enamored and fascinated by the majestic animals. With so much good habitat for them to spread out in the Northern Tier, I’ve been surprised and disappointed that the herd has not grown much or expanded its territory very far.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Fishing license fees in Pennsylvania, and thoughts on ‘Baby’ the pet deer

Looks like the price of fishing licenses won’t increase next year. During his presentation of the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission’s annual report to the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee, Tim Schaeffer, executive director, said even though the agency has the authority to raise fees, license prices won’t rise.

Pennsylvania lawmakers eyeing huge Game Commission balance

After Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Stephen Smith gave his annual report to the House and Senate game and fisheries committees on March 18 and March 26, respectively, the lawmakers wanted to talk about the agency’s huge bank roll.
“What is the balance of the Game Fund as of right now?” asked Rep James Haddock.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Pennsylvania land exchange deal doesn’t quite pass the smell test

We have heard from many people up in arms about the Glen Onoko Falls land deal between the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in Carbon County. I think Dave Gustafson, the commission’s deputy executive director, did an admirable job of trying to defuse hunter anger in our story.
But the proposed transaction – to transfer or exchange 391 acres from the State Game Lands System smells bad to me. Why the lack of transparency?

Study shows brook trout may be able to adapt to heatwaves

Brook trout may have a genetic trick up their scales when it comes to adapting, with limitations, to heatwaves that threaten their existence.
Scientists have known for years that brook trout – an iconic coldwater fish species native to streams and lakes in the eastern United States and Canada – are extremely vulnerable to warming temperatures. Now, a novel study led by researchers at Penn State suggests that brook trout are capable of mounting a protective genetic response to thermal stress that can be passed on from one generation to the next.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Feeding your pets raw food not a good idea

A few months ago, when I was preparing to write a story about a Penn State study showing household pet dogs were spreading antibiotic-resistant salmonella – a serious public health concern – one of the researchers made an off-hand comment I thought was surprising.
She said that one of the reasons they conducted the research was the growing trend of people feeding their dogs raw food. I had no idea that was even a thing.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Pennsylvania Game Commission receives fewer royalties from natural gas last year

At the recent House Game and Fisheries Committee hearing on returning the opening day of deer season to Monday in Pennsylvania, there was an interesting exchange between Rep. Jim Haddock and Steve Smith, Game Commission executive director, that I didn’t get into my news story about the session in the last issue.
Perhaps I should have included it, because some believe it cuts to the heart of the ongoing Saturday vs. Monday opener debate.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Federal protection of hellbenders could impact trout stocking in part of Pennsylvania

In mid-December, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced a proposal to list the eastern hellbender as an endangered species throughout its range under the Endangered Species Act. A population of the unique, huge salamander – once numerous but now just treading water – exists in Pennsylvania’s Northern Tier.
An interesting situation may already be developing around the listing of the hellbender and trout stocking by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission in the state’s northcentral region.
