Fish Ohio program marks 50th anniversary

The state’s fishing license program has achieved its century mark this year and everyone who participates in the Fish Ohio program will receive a symbolic piece of birthday cake.
In a manner of speaking. For this year, the Fish Ohio pin will feature as its emblem a very good representation of the leaping largemouth bass that appeared on the 1925 Ohio license. That was the first time Ohio adults were required to buy a fishing license.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Losing a fishing buddy is never easy, especially when that friend is also a brother

As a wise cousin said to me recently: “Before there were friends, there was family.” That’s true whether the family member is Clark Griswold or Cousin Eddie from National Lampoon’s “Vacation” franchise.
Before I had friends, I had Rich as family. My older brother, to be specific. By three years. Much later in our lives, Rich became a combination of each. Pity we didn’t accomplish both sooner. And now, well, Rich is gone. Along with it, is lost a sounding board for things fishing and shooting.

Ohio’s spring turkey season finishes on a strong note

In spite of oft-times unfavorable weather, Ohio’s flock of turkey hunters didn’t chicken out of chalking up another good spring season.
Officially, says the Ohio Division of Wildlife, hunters harvested 16,014 birds during the spring 2025 season which concluded June 1. This statewide turkey kill total represents all turkeys checked from April 19 through June 1.

Jeff Frischkorn: A day the waves weren’t too ornery on Ohio waters of Lake Erie

The winds and the currents were ornery and contrary, nothing unusual for Lake Erie.
Didn’t help matters for long-time fishing friend Bob Ashley of Mentor, Ohio. Bob fishes out of the Mentor Lagoons practically every day the winds and currents don’t become too ornery and contrary. Today they were and they weren’t, a tad conflicted, if you will.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Getting bullish over bullheads

Nature is loaded with not-quite eureka moments, little items of common things that most of us let simply pass by our view as uninteresting.
That is, of course, until a hint of sorts sets us on a voyage of discovery that reveals just how surprising common can be if we give it half a chance. While many anglers are driven by their interest in Ohio’s glorious and better-known plethora of noble species, I normally spend a portion of April, much of May, and a smidgeon of June chasing lesser fare.

Bobcats spring back to life with a boost from Ohio wildlife center

For the fourteenth time thus far, Lake Metroparks’ wildlife rehabilitation experts successfully saw to it that another bobcat got a second chance of life in Ohio’s wildlands.
The Lake County-based Lake Metroparks’ Penitentiary Glen Reservation/Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center in Kirtland released on May 8 a male bobcat on public land in Jefferson County. This effort was done with the partnership of the Ohio DNR’s Division of Wildlife.

Rain puts a damper on Ohio turkey hunting as harvest ticks down a bit

It rained hard on the Northeast Ohio Zone turkey hunters’ parade opening weekend and continued to dampen the season’s first several days as well.
And the rain was not being kind to the rest of the state’s wild turkey hunting cadre, either. Wild turkey hunters across Ohio have taken 12,451 birds so far during the 2025 spring season, the Ohio Division of Wildlife reported May 5.

More than 10,000 turkeys killed so far in Ohio’s South Zone

Ohio’s 2025 spring wild turkey hunters who are running and gunning are largely experiencing a repeat performance.
As of April 28, the 2025 spring turkey harvest total “has closely mirrored the harvest over the same period in both 2023 and 2024,” says Mark Wiley, the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s biologist in charge of everything wild turkey for the state.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Fish Ohio program exceeding expectations

You have your assembler and then you have your collector.
The first person is a generalist and the second person is a specialist. Then too, you can keep shaving off layers until such a fine point is reached that the individual becomes an exotic expert in the field. For instance, you can assemble a gun cabinet with various kinds of firearms but that doesn’t make you a collector. You’re an assembler, more or less.
